Amelia Garvey and Austin Bautista win Federal Amateur Open

A clutch seven-foot biride putt on the 17th set up a one-stroke win and back-to-back Federal Amateur Open titles for Austin Bautista on Sunday.

The Bonnie Doon member was four shots off the lead after round one but his consistency and his 68 in the final round ensured he would retain the championship.

"It's a good feeling going back-to-back because you have a lot of people out there who don't want you to win," he said.

"The players want to beat the guy who won last year, so it was a good feeling to go and beat a strong field."

Bautista, who will turn professional in January, came down the last squared with Queenslander Charlie Dann but the 19-year-old steadied and emerged victorious.

"I played pretty consistent and then this morning in the third round I got off to a bit of a rocky start and just stuck in, made a couple of big putts coming home and then there in that final round anything can happen," he said.

"There were tough conditions all week, it was dusty every day and it didn't stop. The greens really baked out and got firm, which was expected, but they got quick too."

Royal Canberra's Jordan Ayre finished three shots behind Bautista in outright third.

Meanwhile, the first women's draw at the Federal Amateur Open was taken out by New Zealander Amelia Garvey.

The 16-year-old had a four-stroke lead going into the final round and managed to hold off Grace Kim by one shot, with Celina Yuan another shot behind in third place.

Garvey will now fly back to New Zealand on Monday morning and head straight to school to get ready for her end-of-year exams.

"I play quite a bit over in Australia, so it's good to come over and test some different skills," she said.

"It was playing so differently from the course I played last week in Wellington [at the New Zealand Amateur]."
