GNU (sqt. /ɡəˈnuː/ , G-N-U) është një sistem operativ për kompjutera i kompozuar vetëm me programe kompjuterikë të lirë. Emri i tij është një shkurtim ripërsëritës që do të thotë "GNU's Not Unix" (shqip: GNU Nuk është Unix); u zgjodh sepse projektimi i tij ishte si Unix, por dallohet nga Unix pasi është program i lirë dhe nuk mban kodë të Unix. Zhvilli i GNU filloi nga Richard Stallman dhe ishte fokusi origjinal i Free Software Foundation (FSF, shqip Fondacioni për Programet kompjuterike të Lirë).

GNU është i zhvilluar nga Projekti GNU, dhe programet që lëshohen nën kujdestarinë projektin quhen GNU packages (paketat GNU) ose programe GNU. Komponentët e sistemit bazë përmbajnë GNU Compiler Collection (GCC, shqip Koleksioni GNU i Kompiluesve), GNU Binary Utilities (binutils), bash shell, GNU C library (glibc), dhe GNU Core Utilities (coreutils).

GNU ka një zhvillim aktivë. Nga ajo që kerneli zyrtar, GNU Hurd, nuk është kompletuar. Kështu që zakonisht përdoret kerneli i Linux. Disa programe të GNU-s janë kaluar edhe në platforma të tjera si Microsoft Windows, variante të BSD, Solaris dhe Mac OS X.

GNU is in active development. Although nearly all components have been completed long ago and have been in production use for a decade or more, its official kernel, GNU Hurd, is incomplete and not all GNU components work with it. Thus, the third-party Linux kernel is most commonly used instead. While this kernel has not been officially adopted by the GNU project, some third-party software is included, such as the X.Org release of the X Window System and the TeX typesetting system. Many GNU programs have also been ported to numerous other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, BSD variants, Solaris and Mac OS.

Liçensat GNU General Public License (GPL), GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL), dhe GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) u shkruan posaçërisht për GNU-në, por përdoren edhe nga projekte të tjerë që skanë lidhje me të.
