Senegal (i/ˌsɛnᵻˈɡɔːl, -ˈɡɑːl/;French: le Sénégal), officially the Republic of Senegal (French: République du Sénégal [ʁepyblik dy seneɡal]), is a country in West Africa. Senegal's economical and political capital is Dakar. It is the westernmost country in the mainland of the Old World, or Eurafrasia, and owes its name to the Sénégal River, which borders it to the east and north. The name "Senegal" comes from the Wolof "Sunuu Gaal," which means "Our Boat." Senegal covers a land area of almost 197,000 square kilometres (76,000 sq mi) and has an estimated population of about 13 million. The climate is Sahelian, but there is a rainy season.
The territory of modern Senegal has been inhabited by various ethnic groups since the prehistoric era. Organized kingdoms emerged around the seventh century, and parts of the country were ruled by prominent regional empires such as the Wolof. The present state of Senegal has its roots in European colonialism, which began during the mid-15th century, when various European powers began competing for trade in the area. The establishment of coastal trading posts gradually gave way to control of the mainland, culminating in French rule of the area by the 19th century, albeit amid much local resistance. Senegal peacefully attained independence from France in 1960, and has since been among the more politically stable countries in Africa.

But Senegal is not without its problems. Its economy has recently faltered, due in part to the relative scarcity of natural resources, and there are suggestions that its cherished tradition of democracy is under threat, with the president allegedly grooming his son to succeed him. At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to t...

People are always trying to conjure up a magic formula for getting young people interested in the news, but two Senegalese rappers may have cracked it. Keyti and Xuman - both veterans of Dakar's huge hip-hop scene - present the Journal Rappe, a short TV show that covers the week's news in a hip-hop format. The show was launched in April as a new way for the duo to combine their music with news, politics and entertainment. Journal Rappe takes a humourous approach to current affairs but the rappers take their mission seriously, regularly criticising politicians and encouraging people to register to vote. "I think that the only way to draw people in and capture their attention is to make the product interesting," said Keyti. "That they see we are having a good time making it, because whethe...

http://www.worldbank.org - Until recently, over one hundred thousand vehicles were entering and exiting Dakar, Senegal, using on double lane highway that was often burdened with heavy traffic delays and broken down vehicles. Senegal's economic growth rose to 6.5 percent in 2015 for the first time in more than a decade, the International Monetary Fund has said, buoyed by the agriculture sector and the government's two-year-old economic plan. Senegal is considered to be one of the most stable democracies in West Africa but its economic growth has lagged behind in the continent as a whole for much of the last 10 years. The government launched a plan in early 2014 intended to spur GDP growth and boost development. Senegal has introduced a new group of community health workers, called DSDOMs or home-based care providers. These volunteer community health workers are providing life-saving malaria treatment to those without access to a health facility. Armed with a tool box including rapid diagnostic tests, to detect malaria with the prick of a finger, and medicines, to treat those who test positive, community health workers can provide fast and free care to their sick neighbors without ever having to leave their village. To date, the program has expanded from 20 villages to 1000 villages and, where the program is active, villages have seen a decrease in malaria deaths to near zero. Successful programs like this one are living proof that we're winning fight against malaria.

La Isla de Gorea (en francés, Île de Gorée) es una isla ubicada en África, con una superficie de 17 hectáreas, se ubica frente a la costa del país a que pertenece, Senegal, se encuentra a tres kilómetros frente a Dakar, la capital.
