Isidro Baldenegro López is a subsistence farmer and community leader of Mexico's indigenous Tarahumara people who live in the country's Sierra Madre Mountains. We see in those reforms very positive elements. However, there are some issues it is important to draw attention to, especially regarding constitutional reforms, the elements that were given to congress and that haven't moved forward after months of negotiation. And so, not surprisingly, human rights groups feel disappointed by the lack of transparency in the negotiations."

STORYLINE:
While hailing the recent release of two environmental activists jailed in Chihuahua, a delegation from Amnesty International visiting Mexico criticised the country's lack of judicial reform and continuing police repression in several Mexican states.
A delegation from the London-based human rights organisation has spent the last two weeks touring the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Veracruz.
The delegation concluded at a press conference on Friday that the government has made little progress to improve the law enforcement and judicial operations.
Isidro Baldenegro and Hermenegildo Rivas were jailed 15 months ago charged with illegal possession of weapons and marijuana.
Evidence against the pair, who had been received threats due to their efforts to protect nearby forests from logging, was fabricated and could not stand up in court, according to Amnesty International.
Rupert Knox, the coordinator of the Amnesty International delegation, said local and international pressure had contributed to the release of the prisoners.
At the national level, there have been positive signs in efforts to reform the country's constitution and judicial system, but the process needs to be more open, Knox said.
More than a year ago, President Vicente Fox created the National Program for Human Rights to help push through reforms recommended by a United Nations report on human rights in Mexico that was released in December.
Fox's opposition holds a majority in Congress, and negotiations have moved sluggishly.
Knox pointed out: "there are questions important to stress, especially in regards to constitutional reforms, the elements that were given to Congress and that haven't moved forward after months of negotiation and human rights groups feel disillusioned by the lack of transparency in the negotiations."
Amnesty International delegations visit Mexico at least once a year.

Amnesty International
Amnesty International (commonly known as Amnesty and AI) is a non-governmental organisation focused on human rights with over 7 million members and supporters around the world. The stated objective of the organisation is "to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated."
Amnesty International was founded in London in 1961, following the publication of the article "The Forgotten Prisoners" in The Observer 28 May 1961, by the lawyer Peter Benenson. Amnesty draws attention to human rights abuses and campaigns for compliance with international laws and standards. It works to mobilise public opinion to put pressure on governments that let abuse take place. The organisation was awarded the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize for its "campaign against torture," and the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights in 1978.
In the field of international human rights organisations, Amnesty has the longest history and broadest name recognition, and is believed by many to set standards for the movement as a whole.

Goldman Environmental Prize
The Goldman Environmental Prize is a prize awarded annually to grassroots environmental activists, one from each of the world's six geographic regions:Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America. The prize includes a no-strings-attached award of US$175,000 per recipient. Since the Goldman Environmental Prize was established in 1990, a total of $15.9 million has been awarded to 157 honorees from more than 79 countries, as of 2013. The Goldman Environmental Prize is headquartered in San Francisco, California. It is also called the Green Nobel.
The Goldman Environmental Prize was created in 1990 by civic leaders and philanthropists Richard N. Goldman and his wife, Rhoda H. Goldman. Richard Goldman died at age 90 in 2010 and was predeceased by his wife. Richard Goldman founded Goldman Insurance Services in San Francisco. Rhoda Goldman was a great-grand-niece of Levi Strauss, founder of the worldwide clothing company.

While hailing the recent release of two environmental activists jailed in Chihuahua, a delegation from Amnesty International visiting Mexico criticised the country's lack of judicial reform and continuing police repression in several Mexican states.
A delegation from the London-based human rights organisation has spent the last two weeks touring the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Veracruz.
The delegation concluded at a press conference on Friday that the government has made little progress to improve the law enforcement and judicial operations.
Isidro Baldenegro and Hermenegildo Rivas were jailed 15 months ago charged with illegal possession of weapons and marijuana.
Evidence against the pair, who had been received threats due to their efforts to protect nearby forests from logging, was fabricated and could not stand up in court, according to Amnesty International.
Rupert Knox, the coordinator of the Amnesty International delegation, said local and international pressure had contributed to the release of the prisoners.
At the national level, there have been positive signs in efforts to reform the country's constitution and judicial system, but the process needs to be more open, Knox said.
More than a year ago, President Vicente Fox created the National Program for Human Rights to help push through reforms recommended by a United Nations report on human rights in Mexico that was released in December.
Fox's opposition holds a majority in Congress, and negotiations have moved sluggishly.
Knox pointed out: "there are questions important to stress, especially in regards to constitutional reforms, the elements that were given to Congress and that haven't moved forward after months of negotiation and human rights groups feel disillusioned by the lack of transparency in the negotiations."
Amnesty International delegations visit Mexico at least once a year.
