Faster-than-light (also superluminal or FTL) communication and travel refer to the propagation of information or matter faster than the speed of light. Under the special theory of relativity, a particle (that has rest mass) with subluminal velocity needs infinite energy to accelerate to the speed of light, although special relativity does not forbid the existence of particles that travel faster than light at all times (tachyons).
On the other hand, what some physicists refer to as "apparent" or "effective" FTL depends on the hypothesis that unusually distorted regions of spacetime might permit matter to reach distant locations in less time than light could in normal or undistorted spacetime. Although according to current theories matter is still required to travel subluminally with respect to the locally distorted spacetime region, apparent FTL is not excluded by general relativity. Examples of apparent FTL proposals are the Alcubierre drive and the traversable wormhole, although their physical plausibility is uncertain.
Neil deGrasse Tyson (/ˈniːəl dəˈɡræs ˈtaɪsən/; born October 5, 1958) is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, and science communicator. Since 1996, he has been the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in New York City. The center is part of the American Museum of Natural History, where Tyson founded the Department of Astrophysics in 1997 and has been a research associate in the department since 2003.
Born in New York City, Tyson became interested in astronomy at the age of nine after a visit to the Hayden Planetarium. After graduating from the Bronx High School of Science, where he was editor-in-chief of the Physical Science Journal, he completed a bachelor's degree in physics at Harvard University in 1980. After receiving a master's degree in astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin in 1983, he earned his master's (1989) and doctorate (1991) in astrophysics at Columbia University. For the next three years, he was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University, and in 1994, he joined the Hayden Planetarium as a staff scientist and the Princeton faculty as a visiting research scientist and lecturer. In 1996, he became director of the planetarium and oversaw its $210-million reconstruction project, which was completed in 2000.
The universal speed limit is like the speed limit on the highway. Except in this case the police isn't on the side of the road with their revenue/speed cameras pointed at you; it's the laws of physics. Essentially you must be mass-less to travel beyond the speed the of light, but are there other avenues we can pursue? Space Travel and Technology of Interstellar Exploration - Documentary 2016 To one day, reach the stars. When discussing the possibility of interstellar travel, there is something called “the giggle factor.” Some scientists tend to scoff at the idea of interstellar travel because of the enormous distances that separate the stars. According to Special Relativity (1905), no usable information can travel faster than light locally, and hence it would take centuries to millennia for an extra-terrestrial civilization to travel between the stars. Even the familiar stars we see at night are about 50 to 100 light years from us, and our galaxy is 100,000 light years across. The nearest galaxy is 2 million light years from us. The critics say that the universe is simply too big for interstellar trave...

Could the Big Bang have been the result of something traveling faster than the speed of light? In answering Jeff Sloan's Cosmic Query, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice discuss Cherenkov radiation, sonic booms and light booms, and why a diamond sparkles. Find out how we can conduct faster-than-light experiments if it's impossible to travel faster than the speed of light in this "Behind the Scenes." This "Behind the Scenes" video was shot during the recording of our episode, "Cosmic Queries: Time-Keeping." UFOTV® Accept no Imitations! (Please vote thumbs-up for UFOTV®). Eric Davis, PhD explains faster-than-light space warps, and interstellar space travel. Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity predicts two types of faster-than-light (FTL) space warps that can achieve these goals: Traversable wormholes, and warp drives. The key to FTL space travel is the use of "exotic" matter. Get the details in this fascinating program featuring one of the leading scientists in the field of faster-than-light (FTL) space travel. Dr. Davis is currently employed as a Senior Research Physicist at the Institute for Advanced Studies. He is also Chief Scientist of Warp Drive Metrics, and has provided contract services to the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, and ...

Speed is thrilling to human being – there’s no denying. This has been the case ever since the wheel was invented and speed was no longer determined by the strength of our legs. The faster one goes, the more thrilled one feels, although for some, speed can be really intimidating. In today’s modern age, we’ve developed some really fast objects. We have incredibly fast planes, ultra-fast fighter jets, super-fast bullet trains and so on. Still, there is one thing in the universe that is faster than anything we can conceive: Light.

When Albert Einstein said that nothing travels faster than the speed of light, he didn't talk about objects that could already be traveling faster than light. This is a mind-boggling idea that some physicists have explored over the years, and they call these hypothetical particles tachyons. We recently spoke with Columbia University theoretical physicist Brian Greene about these faster-than-light particles. Here's what he had to say on the matter. This NASA space video is structured around the experimental project to design a revolutionary ion propulsion engine, nearing the speed of light, for future spacecraft to travel interstellar distances. Faster Than Light (FTL) and speed of light travel are nothing new to science fiction, and advanced ion propulsion may reach near the speed of light, but interstellar travel is the term used for hypothetical piloted or unpiloted travel between stars or planetary systems. Interstellar travel will be much more difficult than interplanetary spaceflight; the distances between the planets in the Solar System are less than 30 astronomical units (AU)—whereas the distances between stars are typically hundreds of thousands of AU, and usually expressed in light-years. Because of the vastness of those di...
Advanced interstellar (starship) propulsion concepts are limited by the speed of light, the amount of propulsion fuel carried by starships, or propulsion energy that can be beamed to them, and by the extremely long interstellar flight times and distances to stars that possess exoplanets suitable for exploration. Therefore, it is imperative that we explore alternative propulsion physics that allow the circumvention of the light speed limit, have less demanding propulsion system, fuel or energy requirements, and that manifest relatively short flight times and distances to the stars. Close your eyes go to sleep
Close your eyes get so dizzy
World is spinning in your bed
I know where the sun goes
It's waking up the sparrows
In England it's morning
In time you'll see that some things
Travel faster than light
In time you'll recognise
That love is larger than life
Now you know what you're missing
Now you've seen that I'm willing
If you're looking for the message
Close your eyes
Do you hear what I'm thinking?
Is it how you imagined?
In time you'll see that some things
Travel faster than light
In time you'll recognise
That love is larger than life
And praise will come to those whose kindness
Leaves you without debt
And bends the shape of things
That haven't happened yet
Close your eyes
Colours changing like a lizard
Close your eyes
I know where the sun goes
I have seen the world turning
In time you'll find that some things
Travel faster than light
In time you'll recognise that love is larger than life
And praise will come to those whose kindness
Leaves you without debt
And bends the shape of things to come
