Police have been shot at twice in south-east Queensland overnight, with Commissioner Ian Stewart describing it as a "very disturbing trend".
Officers shot a man who was armed with a gun in a Gold Coast apartment building early on Sunday morning, after he ambushed them in the basement.
The shooting took place at the building on the corner of Cypress and Ferny Avenue in Surfers Paradise about 1.30am, after police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the basement.
A police spokeswoman said the man, believed to be 26 years old, approached police before drawing a gun and opening fire. The two responding officers returned fire and wounded the man in the legs.
The gunman, who was known to police, was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital where he remains in a stable condition with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
Superintendent Michelle Stenner said the way in which a routine call turned violent was "an officer's worst nightmare".
"Both of the officers have shown tremendous bravery and courage in the face of what could have been a very dire outcome for all involved," she said.
A female constable was taken to hospital in a stable condition for assessment, while a male officer did not need treatment.
Two investigations have been launched into the shooting, one overseen by Ethical Standards Command as well as a separate criminal investigation.
On Friday evening, a police car was shot at during a chase through Brisbane.
The chase started after a man fled a Wellington Point residence about 6pm and evaded police in Cleveland.
Polair was called in to assist and the suspect vehicle was later spotted at a Slacks Creek service station where the driver then stole another car after threatening the occupants with a gun about 7.30pm.
As the suspect was leaving the service station he crashed into a police car before fleeing.
Officers pursued the stolen car into Wynnum West where they were fired at twice with a shotgun, before spike strips were successfully deployed and the driver arrested about 8.40pm.
