Man impaled in crash in Karaka, rural south Auckland

A young man is in a critical condition after being impaled in a car crash in rural south Auckland.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Karaka at 4.50pm on Monday.

A fire service spokeswoman said a car had gone into a fence in Kidd Rd.

A 21-year-old had been impaled by the fence, which trapped him in the wreck.

He was having trouble breathing, the spokeswoman said.

The fire service freed him and cleared an area for the Westpac Auckland Rescue Helicopter to land. 

He was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital.
