Johnny Depp sues his former managers for $33 million

Johnny Depp is suing his former business managers alleging they mismanaged his earnings throughout his career, although the company says the actor's "irresponsible" spending is to blame.

Depp's lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court against The Management Group seeks more than $US25 million ($33 million), alleging its owners, Joel and Robert Mandel, failed to properly pay his taxes, made unauthorised loans and overpaid for security and other services.

The complaint, which is 52 pages long, states that "Mr Depp lost tens of millions of dollars and has been forced to dispose of significant assets to pay for TMG's self-dealing and gross misconduct."

The company represented Depp from 1999 until March 2016, receiving 5 per cent of his income from hit films including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Michael Kump, the lawyer representing TMG, said Depp's lawsuit was a "fabrication" aimed at covering up his own "irresponsible and profligate spending", and claimed the actor owed TMG $US4.2 million ($5.6 million) from a loan taken from the company when he faced an "impending default on a $5 million bank loan".

"His tactics and lawsuit will fail, and he will be forced to pay back the loan as promised," Kump said.

The lawsuit comes just as Depp's bitter divorce from ex-wife actress Amber Heard was finalised on Friday, almost a year after Heard accused the actor of domestic violence.

The settlement calls for Depp to pay Heard $US7 million ($A9.3 million), which she has pledged to a pair of charities.

Heard will keep their dogs, Pistol and Boo, and a horse named Arrow, and a confidentiality provision calls for them to refrain from discussing their relationship in interviews or on social media.

Depp recently featured in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and will star in the upcoming sequel despite protestations from the series' fans.
