Mystic Places, Magical Mystery Tour- Documentary Series:
Uxmal is an ancient Maya city of the classical period in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture, along with Chichen Itza in Mexico; Caracol and Xunantunich in Belize, and Tikal in Guatemala. It is located in the Puuc region and is considered one of the Maya cities most representative of the region's dominant architectural style. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its significance.
It is located 62 km south of Mérida, capital of Yucatán state in Mexico. Its buildings are noted for their size and decoration. Ancient roads called sacbes connect the buildings, and also were built to other cities in the area such as Chichén Itzá, Caracol and Xunantunich in modern-day Belize, and Tikal in modern-day Guatemala.
Its buildings are typical of the Riley Kand Puuc style, with smooth low walls that open on ornate friezes based on representations of typical Maya huts. These are represented by columns (representing the reeds used for the walls of the huts) and trapezoidal shapes (representing the thatched roofs). Entwined snakes and, in many cases two-headed snakes are used for masks of the rain god, Chaac; its big noses represent the rays of the storms. Feathered serpents with open fangs are shown leaving from the same human beings. Also seen in some cities are the influences of the Nahua, who followed the cult of Quetzalcoatl and Tlaloc. These were integrated with the original elements of the Puuc tradition.
The buildings take advantage of the terrain to gain height and acquire important volumes, including the Pyramid of the Magician, with five levels, and the Governor's Palace, which covers an area of more than 1,200 m2 (12,917 sq ft).

4ta visita a mi sitio Maya explorado # 13.
Uxmal es sin lugar a dudas un paraíso arquitectónico, admirado, dibujado, fotografiado y contemplado a través de los siglos por cada visitante, explorador, turista y curioso que lo ha visitado.
Este sitio Maya fue el más importante de la región Puuc y llego a cubrir una extensión de más de 12 km2 y a contener una población de aproximadamente 20,000 habitantes durante las etapas del clásico y terminal donde su apogeo fue del 700 al 1000 d.C
La Ciudad, que estaba unida a Kabah por un sacbé de 18 kms de largo, está orientada a lo largo de un eje mayor de casi un kilometro de largo, de norte a sur, en su centro se encuentran grandes conjuntos formados por varios edificios, muchos de ellos indudablemente entre los más bellos del área Maya debido a su fina arquitectura al detalle.
Entre sus estructuras destacan:
La Casa o Pirámide del Adivino o del Enano
Es una de las estructuras más altas de Uxmal y se puede contemplar justo a la entrada al sitio, tiene una forma elíptica única y consta de un basamento de dos cuerpos escalonados, se han ubicado cinco etapas constructivas y se puede ver en su diseño arquitectura tanto Puuc com Chenes. Su nombre se tomo de un relato Maya del siglo XIX, llamado "Leyenda del Enano de Uxmal"
Cuadrángulo de las Monjas
Nombre acuñado por los españoles gracias a su gran parecido con un convento. Consiste de cuatro edificaciones principales construidas a diferentes niveles. El grupo se distingue por su decoración con celosía, motivos serpentinos, mascarones de chac, jaguares, búhos, figuras humanas y chozas
Palacio del Gobernador
Consiste de tres plataformas, de las cuales la primera destaca por su gran volumen. El friso es uno de los ejemplos más bellos y complejos del arte geométrico Maya, elaborado con mosaico de piedra con más de 20,000 piezas individuales. Destacan los mascarones de chac y las serpientes, cuyos atributos de fecundidad, relacionados con el agua y la tierra se complementan con otros de carácter astronómico, también vinculados con el ciclo de la vida. En el famoso dibujo de Frederick Catherwood se puede observar como gran parte de la fachada de este palacio, estaba caída cuando él y John Lloyd Stephens lo visitaron un par de ocasiones en 1840 y 1842, y ahora esta parte esta como nueva gracias al gran trabajo de reconstrucción realizado por los expertos.
Gran Pirámide
Es una pirámide cuadrangular truncada con nueve cuerpos escalonados. La estructura superior lleva el nombre de Templo de las Guacamayas, debido a que estas aves están representadas como motivo principal de las decoraciones del edificio, estas se combinan con grecas y celosía en recuadros formados por serpientes entrelazadas.

Not knowing what to do for our second stop on our 5-Day Carnival Cruise in Progreso (Yucatan) Mexico, we started looking at the different excursions they had to offer. There was Dzibilchaltún Mayan Ruins, Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins, and there was Uxmal Mayan Ruins. Dzibilchaltún looked kind of small, and Chichen Itza had a 2.5 hour bus ride. We did our research and found out that Uxmal had one of the highest ratings and was one of the last big pyramids you can still climb and explore....so we booked it! And boy, are we glad we did! What a memory!
It started with meeting our tour guide in the Mikado show lounge of the ship. Then the group (about 20 of us) walked out to the tour bus. We were given a sack lunch as we boarded the bus (Ham sandwich, bag of chips, banana, and a bottled water (12 oz.)). We then headed for Uxmal as our tour guide explained all about the cities we were driving through, and about the archaeological site of Uxmal.
Once we arrived (1.5 hour drive), we were asked to stay with the group as we had approx. three hours on the site. The guided tour honestly was a little boring as we kept stopping, listening, and not moving, plus it was getting very hot in the humid heat. So...TIP! Peel off quietly from the group, and go explore!
After exploring, we ate another lunch at the one restaurant on site. Make sure to try the pico de gallo (with habanero) with chips! WHOOWAH! Good stuff!
Back on the bus... "siesta time", as the tour guide stated and the 1.5 bus ride back to the boat.
BRING BUG SPRAY! Tons of mosquitoes! BRING EXTRA WATER! Wear comfortable shoes (tennis shoes work just fine).

Uxmal Mayan Ruins - Carnival Cruise Excursion 2015
Not knowing what to do for our second stop on our 5-Day Carnival Cruise in Progreso (Yucatan) Mexico, we started looking at the different excursions they had to offer. There was Dzibilchaltún Mayan Ruins, Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins, and there was Uxmal Mayan Ruins. Dzibilchaltún looked kind of small, and Chichen Itza had a 2.5 hour bus ride. We did our research and found out that Uxmal had one of the highest ratings and was one of the last big pyramids you can still climb and explore....so we booked it! And boy, are we glad we did! What a memory! It started with meeting our tour guide in the Mikado show lounge of the ship. Then the group (about 20 of us) walked out to the tour bus. Uxmal is an ancient Maya city of the classical period in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture, along with Chichen Itza in Mexico; Caracol and Xunantunich in Belize, and Tikal in Guatemala. It is located in the Puuc region and is considered one of the Maya cities most representative of the region's dominant architectural style. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its significance.
It is located 62 km south of Mérida, capital of Yucatán state in Mexico. Its buildings are noted for their size and decoration. Ancient roads called sacbes connect the buildings, and also were built to other cities in the area such as Chichén Itzá, Caracol and Xunantunich in modern-day Belize, and Tikal in modern-day Guatemala.
Its buildings are typical of the Riley Kand Puuc style, with smooth low walls that open on ornate friezes based on representations of typical Maya huts. These are represented by columns (representing the reeds used for the walls of the huts) and trapezoidal shapes (representing the thatched roofs). Entwined snakes and, in many cases two-headed snakes are used for masks of the rain god, Chaac; its big noses represent the rays of the storms. Feathered serpents with open fangs are shown leaving from the same human beings. Also seen in some cities are the influences of the Nahua, who followed the cult of Quetzalcoatl and Tlaloc. These were integrated with the original elements of the Puuc tradition.
The buildings take advantage of the terrain to gain height and acquire important volumes, including the Pyramid of the Magician, with five levels, and the Governor's Palace, which covers an area of more than 1,200 m2 (12,917 sq ft).

Uxmal es sin lugar a dudas un paraíso arquitectónico, admirado, dibujado, fotografiado y contemplado a través de los siglos por cada visitante, explorador, turista y curioso que lo ha visitado.
Este sitio Maya fue el más importante de la región Puuc y llego a cubrir una extensión de más de 12 km2 y a contener una población de aproximadamente 20,000 habitantes durante las etapas del clásico y terminal donde su apogeo fue del 700 al 1000 d.C
La Ciudad, que estaba unida a Kabah por un sacbé de 18 kms de largo, está orientada a lo largo de un eje mayor de casi un kilometro de largo, de norte a sur, en su centro se encuentran grandes conjuntos formados por varios edificios, muchos de ellos indudablemente entre los más bellos del área Maya debido a su fina arquitectura al detalle.
Entre sus estructuras destacan:
La Casa o Pirámide del Adivino o del Enano
Es una de las estructuras más altas de Uxmal y se puede contemplar justo a la entrada al sitio, tiene una forma elíptica única y consta de un basamento de dos cuerpos escalonados, se han ubicado cinco etapas constructivas y se puede ver en su diseño arquitectura tanto Puuc com Chenes. Su nombre se tomo de un relato Maya del siglo XIX, llamado "Leyenda del Enano de Uxmal"
Cuadrángulo de las Monjas
Nombre acuñado por los españoles gracias a su gran parecido con un convento. Consiste de cuatro edificaciones principales construidas a diferentes niveles. El grupo se distingue por su decoración con celosía, motivos serpentinos, mascarones de chac, jaguares, búhos, figuras humanas y chozas
Palacio del Gobernador
Consiste de tres plataformas, de las cuales la primera destaca por su gran volumen. El friso es uno de los ejemplos más bellos y complejos del arte geométrico Maya, elaborado con mosaico de piedra con más de 20,000 piezas individuales. Destacan los mascarones de chac y las serpientes, cuyos atributos de fecundidad, relacionados con el agua y la tierra se complementan con otros de carácter astronómico, también vinculados con el ciclo de la vida. En el famoso dibujo de Frederick Catherwood se puede observar como gran parte de la fachada de este palacio, estaba caída cuando él y John Lloyd Stephens lo visitaron un par de ocasiones en 1840 y 1842, y ahora esta parte esta como nueva gracias al gran trabajo de reconstrucción realizado por los expertos.
Gran Pirámide
Es una pirámide cuadrangular truncada con nueve cuerpos escalonados. La estructura superior lleva el nombre de Templo de las Guacamayas, debido a que estas aves están representadas como motivo principal de las decoraciones del edificio, estas se combinan con grecas y celosía en recuadros formados por serpientes entrelazadas.

Not knowing what to do for our second stop on our 5-Day Carnival Cruise in Progreso (Yucatan) Mexico, we started looking at the different excursions they had to...
Not knowing what to do for our second stop on our 5-Day Carnival Cruise in Progreso (Yucatan) Mexico, we started looking at the different excursions they had to offer. There was Dzibilchaltún Mayan Ruins, Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins, and there was Uxmal Mayan Ruins. Dzibilchaltún looked kind of small, and Chichen Itza had a 2.5 hour bus ride. We did our research and found out that Uxmal had one of the highest ratings and was one of the last big pyramids you can still climb and explore....so we booked it! And boy, are we glad we did! What a memory!
It started with meeting our tour guide in the Mikado show lounge of the ship. Then the group (about 20 of us) walked out to the tour bus. We were given a sack lunch as we boarded the bus (Ham sandwich, bag of chips, banana, and a bottled water (12 oz.)). We then headed for Uxmal as our tour guide explained all about the cities we were driving through, and about the archaeological site of Uxmal.
Once we arrived (1.5 hour drive), we were asked to stay with the group as we had approx. three hours on the site. The guided tour honestly was a little boring as we kept stopping, listening, and not moving, plus it was getting very hot in the humid heat. So...TIP! Peel off quietly from the group, and go explore!
After exploring, we ate another lunch at the one restaurant on site. Make sure to try the pico de gallo (with habanero) with chips! WHOOWAH! Good stuff!
Back on the bus... "siesta time", as the tour guide stated and the 1.5 bus ride back to the boat.
BRING BUG SPRAY! Tons of mosquitoes! BRING EXTRA WATER! Wear comfortable shoes (tennis shoes work just fine).

Uxmal Mayan Ruins, in Mexico's Yucatan, near Merida
The Mayan city of Uxmal ("oosh-mahl", meaning "thrice-built") in the Yucatan was the capital of the Late Classic Mayan state that flourished between 850-925 AD. Uxmal is considered one of the best examples of Puuc architecture, which is named for the nearby hills and characterized by simple stone structures at ground level topped by elaborate horizontal stone carvings of serpents, birds, and the hawk-nosed rain god Chac. We went to Uxmal archaeological site, is really gorgeous, the name comes from the mayan language and it means "the three times built", because of the the times the maya had to rebuild Uxmal. Its buildings are typical of the Riley Kand Puuc style, with smooth low walls that open on ornate friezes based on representations of typical Maya huts.

The Mayan city of Uxmal ("oosh-mahl", meaning "thrice-built") in the Yucatan was the capital of the Late Classic Mayan state that flourished between 850-925 AD. Uxmal is considered one of the best examples of Puuc architecture, which is named for the nearby hills and characterized by simple stone structures at ground level topped by elaborate horizontal stone carvings of serpents, birds, and the hawk-nosed rain god Chac. Its three main structures are the Pyramid of the Magician, the Nunnery Quadrangle, and the Governor's Palace, with many more smaller sites scattered through the 150 acres of excavated and restored ruins.
Uxmal is located about an hour away from Merida, the present day capital of the State of Yucatan in Mexico. Day tours are available form Merida, including one that departs at noon and returns at 11:30 p.m., allowing a half-day exploration of the ruins, followed by dinner, and a Light and Sound show that features a narrated pageant about the history of the Maya while high-intensity spotlights illuminate the ruins in a kaleidoscope of color.
