A news site more relevant to you.

The ABC News site was upgraded this year, to deliver you more of the latest news and weather based on where you live in Australia. This range of new features means we can now bring you an even more comprehensive, relevant and up-to-the-minute news site, available on the device of your choosing.

Local News and Weather – tailor your homepage

You can choose to localise the ABC News homepage to deliver you more of the ABC's top stories for your state or territory, alongside the latest national, world, business and sport news.

By setting a location in the banner of the homepage, you will receive weather and news relevant to your state and region.

In the breaking news section, ‘Just In’, you will get more of the latest headline news from your state or territory. You will also find the ABC's best and most relevant stories exploring current issues, events and everyday life from across your state or territory, the nation and the world.

If you don't want to localise, you don't have to. It's simple to opt out and remain with the nationally-focused mix of news.

Local and National Radio Streams

In the right-hand column, you will find an ABC Radio player. It will be pre-set to the local metropolitan ABC station based on your location but you can also browse ABC’s national radio networks such as triple j and RN.

ABC News 24 & Event Streams

Our live video stream of the ABC's continuous TV news service, ABC News 24, gives you direct access to news headlines every 15 minutes and live coverage of big events wherever you are in Australia. ABC News 24 is available from your homepage's right-hand column. Due to rights issues, the ABC can only open the stream to visitors from overseas for special events.

Social Media

For those of you who consume your news via social media, you can follow Australia's leading Twitter news service - @abcnews - for national and international news.

For local news follow:

WA @abcnewsperth
Victoria @abcnewsmelb
ACT @abcnewscanberra
NSW @abcnewssydney
QLD @abcnewsbrisbane
TAS @abcnewstas
NT @abcnewsnt
SA @abcnewsadelaide

On Facebook, we offer more state news via our flagship ABC News Facebook page. You can also find ABC News on YouTube, Instagram and Flickr.

New digital news network

Around Australia we have a national network of ABC producers and reporters who are updating the ABC News site seven days a week. Our digital teams around the country are working harder than ever to tailor web and mobile services that deliver a rich mix of local, national and international news and information.

Each state and territory homepage has an editorial team driving the selection and presentation of content based on their knowledge of the needs and interests of the people who live there.

How is location used?

ABC News uses a location-based service to identify the state or territory from where you are accessing the site.

For example, people we detect as being in Western Australia will automatically be served the localised WA version of the ABC News homepage, with the location set to Perth. People we detect as being in Victoria will automatically be served the localised Victoria version of the ABC News homepage, with the default region set to Melbourne. Those outside these capital cities can then refine the location using the chooser beside the ABC News logo in the site banner.

You can change your location quickly and easily at any time by using the chooser in the banner. This will change the mix of news and weather you receive on the homepage.

The location service we are using works by detecting the location of the servers providing your internet connection, usually an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or corporate network. Because some people are based in one state or territory and their ISP or corporate network is based in another, this may not work for everyone. However, it's easy for you to change your location - and refine it down to postcode level - at any time using the "Change" button in the centre of the banner.

Read our Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more about our location detection system.
