Dame Valerie Adams' coach Jean-Pierre Egger has retired, forcing a change in her coaching set-up and training base.

Egger was absent from the Rio Olympics, where Adams won a silver medal in the shot put, because of a knee injury.

Now he has retired after a great partnership, which included Olympic gold and two world championships.

"I guess at the young age of 74 it was going to come to an end - he's given me an awesome six years," Adams told Newshub.

Her new team includes Athletics New Zealand's high performance manager, Scott Goodman, who advised her in Rio when Egger could not make the trip.

"Scott has been helping me with my technical work at the moment," she said.

"I see Scott about two to three times a weekend, then the rest of the time I'm here in the gym with my strength and conditioning coach Angus Ross.

"But I am still searching overseas a little bit for my technical coach, but for now the set-up works for me right now."

Adams told Newshub she would not be returning to Switzerland, Egger's home base, but would spend more time at home.

"I'm at the age now where I would like to be based in New Zealand a little bit longer you know. I guess I have to be less selfish and think about life outside of track and field," said Adams.

Adams said she would not be at this year's IAAF World Championships in London, but intends to defend her Commonwealth Games title on the Gold Coast in April next year.
