It's misleading, there are more than 1400 mods in /r/science, a vast majority aren't full mods. Also, this map cherry picks subreddits /r/science is associated with, the real map is probably insane with cross-over connections. For example, AskScience isn't listed on the map, which has be far the strongest connection to /r/science.

tl;dr this is a spurious connection.

There are multiple things going here, both endothermic and exothermic, the net observed effect is endothermic.

The [heat of solvation of NaCl is slightly endothermic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enthalpy_change_of_solution but not so much that you would easily notice.

Ice melting in this manner is entropically driven, and endothermic. The surface of the ice is in equilibrium with liquid water, and the salt imparts itself into this equilibrium causing a freezing point depression, forcing the equilibrium towards the liquid phase. However, liquids require more kinetic energy to be liquids, and that energy is absorbed from the surrounding liquid at a higher temperature. The over all kinetic energy of the system is constant, it's just now spread out over more molecules, so the average kinetic energy of the molecules is not lower, and this we observe at temperature.
