Thomas A. "Tom" DiCillo (born August 14, 1953) is an American film director, screenwriter and cinematographer.
He was born in Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina. His father was Italian and his mother was from New England. He studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia and went on to study filmmaking at New York University's Film School alongside Jim Jarmusch, Howard Brookner, Sara Driver and Spike Lee. Subsequently he worked as an actor, then cinematographer, before making his own films.
His first film, Johnny Suede, cast the then-unknown Brad Pitt and Catherine Keener in what would be their first starring roles. It received a nomination for a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
For his second film, Living in Oblivion, DiCillo received acclaim for his satire of independent film-making. This 1995 black comedy, itself a low-budget independent film, features Steve Buscemi as a director driven to near-madness by his cast and crew, including a vain Hollywood actor. Describing the inspiration for and origin of Living in Oblivion in an interview with Salon, DiCillo described making a movie as "one of the most tedious, boring, painful experiences, and that's just when something goes right".
Steven Vincent "Steve" Buscemi (/buːˈsɛmi/; Italian pronunciation: [buˈʃemi]; born December 13, 1957) is an American actor and film director. Buscemi has starred and supported in successful Hollywood and indie films, including Parting Glances, New York Stories, Mystery Train, Reservoir Dogs, Desperado, Con Air, Armageddon, The Grey Zone, Ghost World, Big Fish, and The Sopranos. He is also known for his appearances in many films by the Coen brothers: Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo, and The Big Lebowski. Buscemi provides the voice of Randall Boggs in the Monsters, Inc. franchise.
From 2010 to 2014, he portrayed Enoch "Nucky" Thompson in the critically acclaimed series Boardwalk Empire, which earned him two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe, and two nominations for an Emmy Award. He made his directorial debut in 1996, with Trees Lounge, in which he also starred. Other works include Animal Factory (2000), Lonesome Jim (2005) and Interview (2007). He has also directed numerous episodes of TV shows, including Homicide: Life on the Street, The Sopranos, Oz, 30 Rock, and Nurse Jackie. He currently hosts the Emmy Award-nominated AOL On comedy talk-show Park Bench.
Independent director Tom DiCillo's lost student film. Long before he made Johnny Suede, Living In Oblivion, Box of Moonlight and Delirious, DiCillo went to NYU's Grad Film program in 1976. God Save The King was his first sync sound film there. The original 16 mm print was recently discovered in a box under a bed in the basement of a juvenile correctional institution. Written, directed and edited by DiCillo, God Save The King has now been restored and converted to HD.

http://www.tomdicillo.com/ ~ Down In Shadowland is a 70 minute feature documentary that journeys into the strange, subterranean world of the NYC subway. I wrote the film, directed it, shot it and edited it. After 25 years in the independent film business it was refreshing and inspiring to make a film where I was obligated to no one but myself. My only goal was to try and capture as closely as possible what my eye sees. The film was shot entirely underground on the NYC subway system between 2009 and 2014. The film screened in the Main Documentary Competition at the 2014 Woodstock Film Festival. http://wff.pointinspace.com/festival2014/details.php?id=29247 SYNOPSIS: If the whole of humanity were marched before our eyes, it might resemble Down in Shadowland, a descent into the subterrane...
