Canberra United have blown a chance to go top of the W-League, losing on the road to the lowly Western Sydney Wanderers in Sydney on Sunday.

With Sydney FC losing 3-1 to Newcastle at home on Saturday, United just needed a win over the previously seventh-placed Wanderers to leapfrog the Sky Blues.

But a first-half goal to Wanderers striker Katherine Stengel proved to be the winner as Canberra struggled to take advantage of their dominant possession.

Co-captain Ellie Brush could only watch from the stands as she's still yet to play her 100th W-League game due to a knee injury.

But she did make her AFL Women's debut in a pre-season trial for the GWS Giants against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday.

She got through about 60-70 per cent of the game and Giants coach Tim Schmidt reported she pulled up well.

But she was left out of the Canberra United side that's playing the Western Sydney Wanderers in Sydney on Sunday.

A medial ligament injury has prevented her from reaching the elusive milestone for a number of week.

The Canberra Cavalry will look to send Toronto Blue Jays prospect Mike Reeves off with a series win when they wrap up their series against the Sydney BLue Sox at Blacktown on Sunday.

Reeves will return home to the USA where he's the best man at a wedding with just one round remaining before the ABL play-offs.

Canberra currently sits in second on the ladder, but could still slip out of the top three with five games remaining.

They lead the Blue Sox series 2-1, with the final game on Sunday at 4pm.

The Canberra Capitals overpowered the Bendigo Spirit to stay alive in the WNBL finals race after going on a final-quarter rampage to secure a 77-63 win.

The Capitals used Carly Wilson's impending retirement for extra motivation in as they came from behind in the dying stages.

Wilson will retire at the end of the year after 19 seasons and is determined to end a five-year finals drought to have a shot at a fairytale send off.

The Capitals road to the play-offs will be tough and they need to win all of their remaining games to charge into the play-offs, starting with a clash against Sydney on Thursday.
