A grand home in classic Southern Highlands style could offer the ultimate luxury tree change for well-heeled buyers.

The two-storey colonial influenced home, highlighted by wraparound verandahs and dormer windows, sits on nearly 6000 square metres of landscaped grounds, a work of passion for original owners Robert and Carole Bourke.

“We’d been holidaying in the Southern Highlands for many years and always promised ourselves we would retire there,” Robert says.

“We spent some time looking around and then came across this builder with plans for the home and we went for it.”

The home is a sensitive blend of formal and informal areas and has the great advantage in offering complete single level living with upstairs reserved for guests.

“The master suite and two other guest bedrooms are on the ground floor with the balance upstairs,” Robert says.

“That’s been great for us and for the big variety of guests we have – from grandchildren to older family members and friends.”

This stately home has so many highlights, from its gracious entry foyer to its massive living spaces and substantial bedrooms with their own sitting areas.

“It’s a year-round house. The formal lounge and dining areas are great in the winter when we can entertain with a big fire roaring away,” Robert says.

“In the summer, our entertaining is usually out on the terrace.”

It’s in the gardens where Robert has made his biggest mark on the estate.

“In the beginning there was basically a lawn and a driveway,” he says.

“I spent years developing the grounds and it’s been designed to ensure there is colour all year round.”

The grounds are ablaze at different times with daffodils, daphnes, tulips, cherry blossoms, azaleas, camillias and a wide variety of roses.

There’s also groves of birch and Japanese maple trees.

“The colours are wonderful whatever the season,” Robert says.

Burradoo is just five minutes from Bowral and close to shops and schools.

The pull of family ties, however, has drawn the Bourkes out of the Southern Highlands and back to Sydney.

“We’ll be sorry to leave but it’s time. We think it will be a great home for a family with several children or even for a couple who want the space but like to live on one level,” Robert says.
