The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R Tolkien

Having just finished the Hobbit, I thought I'd move on to Lord of the Rings. Slow in starting but still a very good book once it does start.

Love it or hate it, nobody could argue The Lord of the Rings is ever fast moving. Make sure to drink it all in, is all I can say!

Oh no I know, still enjoying it though

A lot of fans give Jackson a hard time about what he took out. Not me. So much trudging.

I actually, dare I say it... (whispers) didn'tlikethebooksverymuch for this exact reason. Way too verbose for me, although I can absolutely see why so many people love it. I loved the films though, probably because so much was cut out.

I find that a lot of people have a hard time with the books. Let's face it, Tolkein is dense and it doesn't help that every fantasy book since then is pretty much a copy of it, making the original look hackneyed (with a few exceptions, like Amber)

As a side note, my favorite Tolkein knock off series is The Belgariad.

The only real complaint I have with the Jackson movies is that Eowyn vs the Witch King was not epic enough. I mean yeah it was a cool scene but in the book everything fucking stops to watch this shit go down and Jackson cut it up in favor of Legolas surfing.

I do feel a bit of sympathy for the books (if that's a thing) - I can't think of a single other book that's been copied in such a half-hearted way so many times since its release. It's only recently that fantasy books in different veins are finally starting to become popular (Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire and The Kingkiller Chronicle bear little resemblence to LotR in my opinion).

I just finished the hobbit. I want to start Lord of the Rings, but I also have The Princess Bride to read....

I've also never seen the movies for either so it's going to be a new experience either way.

So many books I need to read, so little time.

The Princess Bride movie's one of those one's that's actually better than the book, imo. You gotta check it out!
