The Chief of Army of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, wept on Monday as he read the funeral oration at the graveside of the seven military men killed by the Boko Haram terrorists. They are: late Lt.-Col. Muhammad Abu-Ali, Seargents Muazu Ibrahim, Bassey Okon, Hussani Jafaru, Cpl. Chukwu Simon, Private Salisu Lawal and Seaman Patrick Paul.
They died when the terrorists attempted to seize Mallam Fatori on Nov. 4 in an attack. The soldiers were inducted into the Operation Lafiya Dole in 2014, designed to fight the Boko Haram insurgents and liberate the North-East from their hold. “They were brave, precise, professional and inspiring. They led the battle to recapture the following towns: Monguno, Baga, new Marte, Bama, Gwoza, Banki Junction, Gamboru-Ngala, Yale, Yanteke, Bita, Deruwa, Daira Kangaruwa and Mallam Fatori.
“In these battles, they rescued children and women, fathers and mothers, the young and the old and restored peace and hope to Nigerian citizens.
At last, on Nov. 4, they paid the supreme sacrifice in the battle of Mallam Fatori,’’ Buratai said. According to him, the deceased epitomised the very best of our military. They exemplified the values of our nation and the military which are: loyalty, discipline, courage, selfless service, respect, honour and dignity. Buratai said that the deceased fought for the unity of the nation, adding that “your labour will never be in vain”.
He promised that the army would take care of their survivors.
Earlier, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by his Chief of Staff at the occasion, Alhaji Abba Kyari, said the deceased had shown unalloyed commitment to the nation.
“They were fearless, responsive, inspiring, selfless and dedicated to their duties. “The selflessness of these gentlemen reinvigorate the memories of other great fallen heroes, who stood firm in the defence of our dear nation,’’ the president said. Buhari noted that the deceased had paid the supreme sacrifice in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the North-East, adding that their sacrifices would not go in vain.
He also noted that their contributions had resulted in the restoration of normalcy in the region. “It is, therefore, our resolve that the labour of these fallen heroes shall never be in vain,’’ he said, adding that insurgency and terrorism would be defeated. The dignitaries that attended the funeral included the service chiefs, Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno, Ministers of Information and culture, and Interior, and Senators Ali Ndume, Dino Melaye and Phillip Aduda. Also at the burial were the Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, and Wife of the Senate President, Toyin Saraki, among others. The deceased were interred at about 5.55 p.m. after all necessary military ceremonies.

Ahmed Omar Abu Ali
Ahmed Omar Abu Ali (Arabic: احمد عمر أبو علي) is an American who was convicted of providing material support to the al Qaeda terrorist network and conspiracy to assassinate President George W. Bush.
Background
Born in Houston, Texas, in March 1981 and raised in Falls Church, Virginia, Abu Ali was valedictorian of his class at the Islamic Saudi Academy high school in nearby Alexandria. Abu Ali entered the University of Maryland in the fall of 1999 as an electrical engineering major, prayed at the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, Virginia (where two of the 9/11 hijackers and the suspected shooter in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting prayed), but withdrew in the middle of the 2000 spring semester to study Islamic theology at the Islamic University of Medina in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
Arrest and detention in Saudi Arabia
In June 2003, Abu Ali was arrested by Saudi authorities while taking exams at the Islamic University of Medina. He was held for approximately 20 months by the Saudi government without charges or access to an attorney, and given the paucity of information coming out of Saudi Arabia about the case, many human rights organizations speculated that Abu Ali's situation was actually a case of extraordinary rendition and that he might be subject to torture. In addition, comments allegedly made by Gordon Kromberg, a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, heightened the concerns that Abu Ali had faced torture during his detention and interrogation in Saudi Arabia. In 2003, Kromberg was asked by a defense lawyer whether Abu Ali would be brought to the United States to face charges. Kromberg responded: "He's no good for us here. He has no fingernails left," according to an affidavit filed in court by the lawyer, Salim Ali.

Ali ibn Abi Talib (/ˈɑːli, ɑːˈliː/;Arabic: علي بن أبي طالب, translit. ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib, Arabic pronunciation: [ʕaliː bɪn ʔabiː t̪ˤaːlɪb]; 13 Rajab, 21 BH – 21 Ramadan, 40 AH; 15 September 601 – 29 January 661) was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, ruling over the Islamic caliphate from 656 to 661.
Born to Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asad, Ali was the only person born in the sacred sanctuary of the Kaaba in Mecca, the holiest place in Islam, as many sources, especially Shia ones say. Ali was the first young male who accepted Islam. After migrating to Medina, he married Muhammad's daughter Fatimah. Ali took part in the early caravan raids from Mecca and later in almost all the battles fought by the nascent Muslim community. He was appointed caliph by Muhammad's Companions (Sahaba) in 656, after caliph Uthman ibn Affan was assassinated. Ali's reign saw civil unrest and in 661, he was attacked and assassinated by a Kharijite while praying in the Great Mosque of Kufa, dying two days later.

Boko Haram
Boko Haram, referred to by themselves as Wilāyat Gharb Ifrīqīyyah (Arabic: الولاية الإسلامية غرب أفريقيا, (Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP), and Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād (Arabic: جماعة أهل السنة للدعوة والجهاد, "Group of the People of Sunnah for Preaching and Jihad"), is an Islamic extremist group based in northeastern Nigeria, also active in Chad, Niger and northern Cameroon. The group's leader is Abubakar Shekau. The group had alleged links to al-Qaeda, but in March 2015, it announced its allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Since the current insurgency started in 2009, it has killed 20,000 and displaced 2.3 million from their homes.
After its founding in 2002, Boko Haram's increasing radicalization led to a violent uprising in July 2009 in which its leader was summarily executed. Its unexpected resurgence, following a mass prison break in September 2010, was accompanied by increasingly sophisticated attacks, initially against soft targets, and progressing in 2011 to include suicide bombings of police buildings and the United Nations office in Abuja. The government's establishment of a state of emergency at the beginning of 2012, extended in the following year to cover the entire northeast of Nigeria, led to an increase in both security force abuses and militant attacks.

The dignitaries that attended the funeral included the service chiefs, Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno, Ministers of Information and culture, and Interior, and Senators Ali Ndume, Dino Melaye and Phillip Aduda. Also at the burial were the Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, and Wife of the Senate President, Toyin Saraki, among others. The deceased were interred at about 5.55 p.m. after all necessary military ceremonies.

The Chief of Army of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, wept on Monday as he read the funeral oration at the graveside of the seven military men killed by the Boko Haram terrorists. They are: late Lt.-Col. Muhammad Abu-Ali, Seargents Muazu Ibrahim, Bassey Okon, Hussani Jafaru, Cpl. Chukwu Simon, Private Salisu Lawal and Seaman Patrick Paul.
They died when the terrorists attempted to seize Mallam Fatori on Nov. 4 in an attack. The soldiers were inducted into the Operation Lafiya Dole in 2014, designed to fight the Boko Haram insurgents and liberate the North-East from their hold. “They were brave, precise, professional and inspiring. They led the battle to recapture the following towns: Monguno, Baga, new Marte, Bama, Gwoza, Banki Junction, Gamboru-Ngala, Yale, Yanteke, Bita, Deruwa, Daira Kangaruwa and Mallam Fatori.

STORYLINE
An American man accused of joining al-Qaida and plotting to assassinate President George W. Bush wants a forensic examination of scars on his back to corroborate claims that Saudi officials extracted a confession through torture.
The lawyer for 23-year-old Ahmed Omar Abu Ali filed a motion on Monday seeking "immediate access to medical, psychological and forensic experts to examine and evaluate Mr. Abu Ali for evidence of torture".
The motion was filed at Abu Ali's arraignment in US District Court in Alexandra, Virginia, where he pleaded innocent to providing material support to terrorists and other charges.
The six-count indictment handed down last month could carry a sentence of up to 80 years in prison.
Prosecutors say Abu Ali - a US citizen who graduated at the top of his class at an Islamic private school in northern Virginia - joined al-Qaida while studying in Saudi Arabia and that he discussed numerous acts of violence with other al-Qaida members, including a plan in which he would either shoot Bush or detonate a car bomb.
Other discussions included a September 11-style attack in which aeroplanes would be hijacked from Britain or Australia and flown to targets in the United States, the prosecutors say.
An FBI agent testified at a previous hearing that Abu Ali admitted his guilt many times in interviews with Saudi and American authorities.
But his lawyers say the government's evidence was obtained through torture and that they have seen the scars on Abu Ali's back from the beatings he endured while in Saudi custody.
Abu Ali has claimed he was whipped by Saudi authorities but prosecutors have denied that Abu Ali was mistreated.
The US District Judge said he would hold a hearing on the defence request, possibly as soon as Friday.
He set an August 22 trial date at Monday's hearing, despite defence protests that federal trial rules normally would guarantee Abu Ali a trial date no later than May 4.
Abu Ali is being held at an Alexandria jail while he awaits trial under excessively restrictive conditions, which prohibit him from speaking with his parents, his lawyer said.

An American man accused of joining al-Qaida and plotting to assassinate President George W. Bush wants a forensic examination of scars on his back to corroborate claims that Saudi officials extracted a confession through torture.
The lawyer for 23-year-old Ahmed Omar Abu Ali filed a motion on Monday seeking "immediate access to medical, psychological and forensic experts to examine and evaluate Mr. Abu Ali for evidence of torture".
The motion was filed at Abu Ali's arraignment in US District Court in Alexandra, Virginia, where he pleaded innocent to providing material support to terrorists and other charges.
The six-count indictment handed down last month could carry a sentence of up to 80 years in prison.
Prosecutors say Abu Ali - a US citizen who graduated at the top of his class at an Islamic private school in northern Virginia - joined al-Qaida while studying in Saudi Arabia and that he discussed numerous acts of violence with other al-Qaida members, including a plan in which he would either shoot Bush or detonate a car bomb.
Other discussions included a September 11-style attack in which aeroplanes would be hijacked from Britain or Australia and flown to targets in the United States, the prosecutors say.
An FBI agent testified at a previous hearing that Abu Ali admitted his guilt many times in interviews with Saudi and American authorities.
But his lawyers say the government's evidence was obtained through torture and that they have seen the scars on Abu Ali's back from the beatings he endured while in Saudi custody.
Abu Ali has claimed he was whipped by Saudi authorities but prosecutors have denied that Abu Ali was mistreated.
The US District Judge said he would hold a hearing on the defence request, possibly as soon as Friday.
He set an August 22 trial date at Monday's hearing, despite defence protests that federal trial rules normally would guarantee Abu Ali a trial date no later than May 4.
Abu Ali is being held at an Alexandria jail while he awaits trial under excessively restrictive conditions, which prohibit him from speaking with his parents, his lawyer said.
