Steamy night in Brisbane

Jacobus Cronje, Saturday January 21, 2017 - 14:29 EDT

In the early hours of the morning, Brisbane had its warmest minimum temperature since at least 1999, when the mercury halted its descent at 28 degrees just after 3am.

Warm conditions were exacerbated by high humidity values above 70%, making it feel at least 32 degrees for much of the night.

Other locations within the area also broke records, with Gatton experiencing its warmest night since 1998, while the airport had its second hottest night for any month as its hottest night for January at 28 degrees.

Cloudy and humid conditions overnight brought on by a low pressure trough extending from the interior contributed to the swampy night in southeastern Queensland.

Following the uncomfortable heat on Friday evening and into this morning, a cool day and evening are expected, thanks to a cool change that swept to the south of the city today. Cooling onshore circulation in coming days will help to keep conditions closer to average.
