Stormy conditions again for Aotearoa

Graeme Brittain, Saturday January 21, 2017 - 11:51 EDT

Another intense low pressure system is set to impact New Zealand from this evening, with heavy rain and severe gales forecast.

The low pressure system that brought heavy rain and storm force winds to parts of the Tasmanian Coast during Friday is currently tracking across the Tasman Sea and heading directly towards New Zealand.

Widespread rainfall totals in excess of 70mm are expected for the west coast of the South Island, with the higher ground over Nelson and Buller potentially receiving over 100mm in less than 24 hours.

The majority of the county will see gale force winds with the passage of this low and some exposed localities are anticipated to see severe gales, with wind gusts in excess of 90km/h.

The system will gradually clear overnight Sunday into Monday, with more settled conditions predicted for the North Island, but the South Island will see another bout of rain and gusty winds during Tuesday.
