A man wanted for offences has disappeared off South Australia's West Coast after running into the ocean while being chased by police.

Police were pursuing the man when he ran into the water near Dowling Crescent at Ceduna at 6:00pm Saturday.

Officers watched from the shore as the man swam out about 200 metres but eventually lost sight of him.

A search by the State Emergency Service, assisted with boats from National Parks SA, failed to find the man.

Police are continuing the search and said water operations and Star Group officers would arrive at Ceduna to assist.

Police would not elaborate on what the man's offences were.
