El Salvador (i/ɛl ˈsælvədɔːr/; Spanish: [el salβaˈðor]), officially the Republic of El Salvador (Spanish: República de El Salvador, literally "Republic of The Savior"), is the smallest and the most densely populated country in Central America. El Salvador's capital and largest city is San Salvador. As of 2015, El Salvador had a population of approximately 6.38 million, making it the most densely populated country in the region. Its population consists largely of Mestizos of European and Indigenous American descent.
El Salvador was for centuries inhabited by several Mesoamerican nations, especially the Cuzcatlecs, as well as the Lenca and Maya. In the early 16th century, the Spanish Empire conquered the territory, incorporating it into the Viceroyalty of New Spain. In 1821, the country achieved independence from Spain as part of the First Mexican Empire, only to further secede as part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823. Upon the republic's dissolution in 1841, El Salvador became sovereign until forming a short-lived union with Honduras and Nicaragua called the Greater Republic of Central America, which lasted from 1895 to 1898.

San Miguel (also known as Volcán Chaparrastique) is a stratovolcano in central-eastern El Salvador, approximately 15 km southwest of the city of San Miguel. On January 16, 2002, a minor eruption of steam, gas, and ash occurred from the summit crater, lasting 3 hours but causing no real damage to life or property. Carbon dioxide emissions had been monitored since November 2001, and their steady increase continued to build up until the eruption.
Eleven years later, on December 29, 2013, San Miguel erupted at 10:30 local time spewing ash and smoke into the sky, and prompted the evacuation of thousands of people living in a 3 km radius around the volcano. It was preceded and caused by increased seismic activity beginning at 06:30 local time.

El Salvador's Chaparrastique Volcano In San Miguel Erupts For First Time In 37 Years The Chaparrastique volcano in El Salvador continued to spew gas and ash into the air on Monday after initially erupting on Sunday. "The Chaparrastique volcano is still producing gases combined with small emissions of ash, which is normal after an eruption," El Salvador's environment ministry said. More than 1,600 people living near the volcano have evacuated. "We have implemented emergency measures to evacuate villages located within 3 kilometers of the volcano," Civil Defense Director Jorge Melendez said Sunday. So far, no one has been reported hurt. At least 36 international flights into and out of El Salvador were suspended because of the eruption. The 7,025-foot volcano is located about 30 miles...

Ash exploded and rose 500 metres (546 yards) from Chaparrastique volcano in San Miguel on Wednesday, in response the Governor told the press that the town is now on orange alert Thursday. Since January there has been ongoing seismic activity underneath the volcano, which prompted the military to arrive in preparation for the evacuation of residents. Chaparrastique volcano is the most active in the country and it last erupted December 29. Local press reports that the department of Civil Protection has identified around 60 families who are most at risk - due to their proximity to the site - and has put together evacuation plans to safeguard the health and safety of vulnerable communities. El Salvador Impresionante / El Salvador Impressive http://elsalvador.travel/impressive/en/ Today we will travel through El Salvador, a little great country that has a lot to show, so let’s not waste time and let's go to our first destination: Suchitoto, which is for me the great secret jewel of the colonial towns. Located next to Lake Suchitlán, there are few colonial cities in Latin America as well preserved and so little exploited by tourism, so it is a delight to walk through its streets surrounded by colors, history and especially the Salvadoran peaceful life. Important notice! If you come to Suchitoto you are going to get your hands dirty because we are in one of the great centers of natural production of indigo. For those who do not know what I’m saying, indigo is a plant whose lea...

From Flores, Guatemala, I fly to San Salvador, capital of El Salvador. I take a tour of the historical central core, then head up to a nearby volcano to see a crater. After stopping off a great vantage point overlooking in the city, I head back to the hotel. Instead of being a hotbed of gang violence, I find the El Salvadorian capital to be a great stopover.

Globe Trekker Megan McCormick travels to Barcelona in the Spanish region of Catalunya where she discovers a culture which prides itself on being different. With its sunkissed beaches, and Gothic palaces it’s an Olympian city worthy of the gods and the modernist capital of the world where some of the greatest artists on earth found their fame. First off, Megan travels back in time to the city’s “grey years” - between the end of the civil war and General Franco’s death – when there was a huge zest for change, to move on to a new era. It stoked the desire to transform the city itself, while the Olympic Games bid and then the Games themselves provided extra incentive, not to mention cash. The finest architects and urban planners were persuaded to take part in this vision. The axis upon which ...

After last weeks major uptick in earthquake activity, producing multiple M7.0+ events in the West Pacific + Asia -- we now see a new round of deep earthquakes has struck below the West Pacific plate. New "silence" has formed off the coast of the Pacific Northwest, and along far South California -- multiple dormant volcanoes now moving (have moved) up the West Coast of California, and also through Nevada, Oregon, and Washington state. Add in the large fissure which formed in Central Eastern Wyoming in the Bighorn Mountains, East of Yellowstone supervolcano , and a greater picture of seismic unrest along the West coast of the United States begins to take shape. There may indeed be large earthquake activity to strike the West coast of the United States in the next week or so, most likely t...
