With the Princess Theatre almost filled to capacity until March, it's safe to say that The Book of Mormon is the hottest ticket in town.

So when the show's producers decided to pop tickets to the first preview performance on sale for $20, it's no surprise that people began queuing early.

Local Mormons try outsmarting musical

Mormons are planning a PR counter-offensive to the music The Book of Mormon, a savage satire of their religion that opens in Melbourne next month.

The first dedicated fans began arriving before 5pm on Sunday, with a handful staking their position on the stoop outside the theatre.

Twelve hours later that crowd swelled and by 7am on Monday more than 500 people were already in the queue with the line snaking down Little Bourke Street, up Exhibition Street and along Bourke Street back to Spring Street.

Fans who got in early were treated to a surprise meet and greet with some of the cast members who stopped for a photo late on Sunday.

The show, which was created by South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone, has been an international hit since it opened on Broadway in 2011.

It follows two Mormon missionaries sent to Africa to spread the message of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in an hilarious send-up of the movement's beliefs and techniques.

The Australian production, which will star two leads imported from the US alongside a handful of local cast members, was to officially begin previews on January 18, but an extra preview was announced on January 17 with all tickets to the 1488-seat theatre just $20.

For those wanting to be among the first to see the show it is the only opportunity with performances fully sold out for all of January and only limited availability in February.

Seats in the stalls are limited through to the end of March, with only second balcony seats available at a number of performances.
