A heatwave sweeping south-east Queensland is nearly over, with an eagerly anticipated cool southerly change expected on Saturday.
Brisbane recorded its equal hottest January night with the temperature only dropping to 28C overnight Friday. The conditions matched the city's January record for the highest daily minimum set in 1940.
However some relief from the balmy conditions is expected with a swift and cool southerly change expected to sweep Brisbane just after lunch time on Saturday.
The change was moving up the NSW coast on Saturday morning and will bring showers and possibly thunderstorms.
"I wouldn't rule out storms, but there is likely to be a shower or two for sure," BOM meterologist Kev Hutchins told AAP.
A top of 33C is forecast in Brisbane on Saturday, with the maximum to drop to 30C on Sunday.
The change will bring an end to a second round of heatwave conditions that have swept south-east Queensland.
Above average temperatures also made conditions uncomfortable for much of last week.
A humid top of 33C is forecast for Brisbane, while maximum temperatures of 34C are expected in Ipswich and Gatton.
