John Howard Carpenter (born January 16, 1948) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, editor and composer. Although Carpenter has worked in numerous film genres, he is most commonly associated with horror and science fiction films from the 1970s and 1980s.
Most films in Carpenter's career were initially commercial and critical failures, with the notable exceptions of Halloween (1978), Escape from New York (1981) and Starman (1984). However many of Carpenter's films from the 1970s and the 1980s have come to be viewed as cult classics, and he has been acknowledged as an influential filmmaker. Cult classics that Carpenter directed include: Dark Star (1974), Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), The Fog (1980), The Thing (1982), Christine (1983), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), Prince of Darkness (1987) and They Live (1988).
Carpenter is also notable for having composed or co-composed most of the music of his films; some of them are now considered cult as well, with the main theme of Halloween being considered a part of popular culture. He released his first studio album Lost Themes on 2015, and also won a Saturn Award for Best Music for Vampires (1998).

Plot: In 1965, 'Bob Crane (I)' (qv), who had achieved some earlier success as a television supporting actor, was working as a successful morning radio DJ at KNX Los Angeles. Despite enjoying his work, photography (especially of the female form) and drumming, Crane wanted to be a movie star. So it was with some reluctance that he accepted the title starring role in a new television sitcom called _"Hogan's Heroes" (1965)_ (qv), a WWII POW comedy. To his surprise, the show became a hit and catapulted him to television stardom. The fame resulting from the show led to excesses and a meeting with home video salesman and technician John Carpenter, with who he would form a friendship based on their mutual interests, namely excessive sex (for Crane, purely heterosexual sex) and capturing nude females on celluloid. His fame allowed Crane to have as much sex as he wanted, which was incongruent to his somewhat wholesome television friendly image, and the way he portrayed himself to almost everyone except Carpenter and his extramarital sex partners. His sex addiction was somewhat known but ignored by his high school sweetheart/first wife Anne Crane née Terzian, but well known by his second wife, Patti Olson, better known as 'Sigrid Valdis' (qv), his Hogan's Heroes co-star. Especially after the end of Hogan's Heroes in 1971, this incongruence and his friendship with Carpenter, with who he would have a continuing love/hate relationship, would contribute to both his professional and personal downfall.

John Carpenter discusses his early life and career directing movies.
I picked up Scream Factory's 2-Disc BluRay set of John Carpenter's THE THING and it is excellent - the new 2k transfer provides amazing new detail and the movie is easily the best it's ever appeared on video. The new commentary tracks and short interview docs Michael Felsher produced are all genuinely superb. I honestly didn't think a whole lot more could be done supplemental wise after the original TERROR TAKES SHAPE doc from the laserdisc release, but the interviews with the various actors are great and the Carpenter interview is fun, if not particularly revealing. Felsher's interview with producer Stuart Cohen for the new commentary track is truly fantastic though as Cohen's memory is miraculous and he provides many new revelations about the production. Frankly, this track alone was...

Press conferences don't give you nearly enough time you want to chat with a filmmaker. When Shock wrapped The Ward press event, well, we wanted to talk a bit more with director John Carpenter. Of course, it didn't help that the conference got hijacked by press members who wanted to talk with star Amber Heard more about Playboy. A few weeks later, we caught up to the main man at his office in Hollywood. And, as usual, he was game to talk about anything. Carpenter opens up about the industry, his fellow directors (and the new blood), horror fatigue, upcoming projects and whether he has anything left to say through the craft of filmmaking anymore.
