Over the top was the general state of affairs at the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards.
On a night when film and television rub shoulders, stars are more inclined to wear their creativity on their sleeves and opt for something a little more flirtatious than they might to a more pompous affair like the Oscars.

A big night at the Golden Globes
A clean sweep for La La Land and some anti-Trump speeches marked the 2017 Golden Globes.
Think Cinderella ballgowns, embroidery, metallics, sequins, and the statement colour of the night - yellow.
Here are our top trends:
Romantic metallics

If you were in metallic, you were on-trend, but you didn't really stand out from the hordes of others also rocking the same look.
Australian actor and Lion star, Nicole Kidman, might have won in her silver sequin Alexander McQueen gown if it were not for the off-the-shoulder sleeves.
"I love sleeves," she said of the dress, which now makes this awkward.
The main thing is that her daughters with husband Keith Urban, Sunday, 8, and Faith, 6, couldn't get enough of it.
"They loved this dress," Kidman told Entertainment Tonight. "I said, 'Do I look like your fairy godmother?' And they said, 'You're our fairy mother!'"
Yellow

This look was best seen on the winner of the best actress in a supporting role award, Fences star Viola Davis. Her bright yellow, one-shouldered, Grecian-style Michael Kors gown was chic, but caused E! red carpet host, Ryan Seacrest, some grief.
"What colour is this?" he asked on live television.
"Yellow," she told him.
Riveting stuff.
Floral ballgowns

If wearing a ballgown wasn't going hard enough for a red carpet, throw in some eye-catching floral for good measure. Bonus points if it's embroidered.
There is no doubt about it that Olivia Culpo came out on top in her Zuhair Murad creation. The full-skirted gown with a crisscross neckline and embroidered flowers made a number of worst-dressed lists, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and this is a real beauty.
Special mention:

Westworld actor Evan Rachel Wood wore a custom-made suit by Joseph Altuzarra because she wanted young girls and women to know "[dresses] aren't a requirement".
She added:"You don't have to wear one if you don't want to. To just be yourself because your worth is more than that."
