A severe thunderstorm warning issued on Friday for Canberra has been cancelled, with damaging winds expected to pass the capital by.

The Bureau of Meteorology put out the warning on Friday morning for Canberra, Goulburn and Nowra, as well as other parts of New South Wales, but revised its forecast about 1:30 pm.

Heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding was now expected to hit further across the border, with Tamworth, Gunnedah, Moree, Narrabri, Walgett and Dubbo expected to be affected.

Last Friday, a freak windstorm took Canberrans by surprise, with homes damaged, trees felled and thousands left without power in the aftermath.

More to come.
