An aerial study of the Newry Canal, filmed between April and June in 2016.
The Newry Canal was built to link the Tyrone coalfields (via Lough Neagh and the River Bann) to the Irish Sea at Carlingford Lough near Newry. It was the first summit level canal to be built in Ireland or Great Britain. It was authorised by the Commissioners of Inland Navigation for Ireland, and was publicly funded.
It was opened in 1742, but there were issues with the lock construction, the width of the summit level and the water supply. Below Newry, a ship canal was opened in 1769, and both Newry and the canal flourished.
By 1800, the canal was in a poor condition, and another £57,000 of public money was spent refurbishing it over the following ten years. Closures during the refurbishment resulted in a loss of traffic, which did not fully recover.
In 1829, both canals were transferred to a private company, who spent £80,000 on improvements over the next twenty years. The ship canal was enlarged in 1884, to allow ships of 5,000 tons to reach Newry. It reverted to public ownership in 1901, when the Newry Port and Harbour Authority was created. The canal closed in 1936 and most of it was officially abandoned in 1949, with some in 1956. The ship canal closed in 1966 and the Authority was wound up in 1974.
Two sections of the redundant canal were bought by local authorities, for two pounds each, and the middle section was given to another two local authorities. The ship canal has been reopened for use by pleasure craft, and there have been attempts to reopen the Newry Canal, which have not yet been successful.
The towpath has become part of a long distance footpath and also part of the National Cycle Network. Some restoration has taken place, and the canal has become a haven for wildlife. Parts of it are also used for coarse fishing.

Newry (/ˈnjʊəri/;from Irish: An Iúraigh) is a city in Northern Ireland, 34 miles (55 km) from Belfast and 67 miles (108 km) from Dublin. It had a population of 29,946 in 2011.
Newry was founded in 1144 alongside a Cistercian monastery, although there are references to earlier settlements in the area. It is one of Ireland's oldest towns.
Newry is at the entry to the "Gap of the North", close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. It grew as a market town and a garrison and became a port in 1742 when it was linked to Lough Neagh by the first summit-level canal built in Ireland or Great Britain. In 2002, as part of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee celebrations, Newry was granted city status along with Lisburn.
Name
The name Newry derives from an anglicisation of An Iúraigh, an oblique form of An Iúrach, which means "the grove of yew trees".
The modern Irish name for Newry is An tIúr (pronounced [ən̠ʲ tʲuːɾˠ]), which means "the yew tree". An tIúr is an abbreviation of Iúr Cinn Trá, which itself means "yew tree at the head of the strand". This relates to an apocryphal story that Saint Patrick planted a yew tree there in the 5th century.

This week's riots in Northern Ireland have already cost the province tens of (m) millions of dollars, and its feared the bill will rise sharply by July 12 when the marching season reaches its climax.
APTV visited the province to see how business and tourism have been affected by the recent troubles.
The view over Newry may be peaceful, but that's deceptive.
Approaching the town along the main road between Belfast and Dublin motorists edge their way past roadblocks of burnt out lorries.
Inside Newry itself workmen remove wreckage from a government building which was set on fire.
Local people say the violence affects their lives in many ways.

"Well it's hard to get about, depends where you're going to. You can't take taxis, taxis are all off the road, in case they get hijacked, so literally you're in your own estate."

Back on the road overlooking the town an American tourist is getting his first real taste of the troubles.

"I've seen a lot of graffiti on the road, aside from that I really haven't seen a lot until I just came to this site here. This is my first sight I've seen of destruction and an actual terrorist act."

This is the usual face of tourism in Northern Ireland, an open air swimming pool in the seaside town of Newcastle, south of Belfast.
The town rarely sees any violence itself.
But there's concern T-V pictures of rioting, beamed worldwide, will drive away the desperately needed holiday makers.
This tourist office was firebombed earlier this year. The tourist officer admits the current wave of violence has affected the number of visitors to the town.

"Well I suppose up until the last few days we were actually very positive about what tourism was going to be like here for the summer. We had considerable bookings but over these past few days I have to say we've had some cancellations. Obviously the pictures going out about Northern Ireland are not helping us here in Newcastle."

Newcastle, with just 7-thousand permanent residents sees its population rise to 60-thousand during the peak holiday season.
This Dutch tourist hasn't been put off by the violence.
