Here's a short amateur interview from the mid 2000's with the veteran actor Douglas Wilmer who played Sherlock Holmes in the superb 1965 BBC series.
Douglas Wilmer is described by many in the Society as the Sherlock Holmes. Born January 8th, 1920 in London, and educated at King's, Canterbury, Douglas Wilmer's film debut was in 1954, in Laurence Olivier's Richard III as Dorset. Established as a supporting actor, his best-remembered film role is Nayland Smith in the Christopher Lee Fu Manchu series, when he was cast after Nigel Green declined the part.
Produced by David Goddard in 1964, the BBC production of The Speckled Band was the first of Wilmer's appearances as Sherlock Holmes, with Nigel Stock as Watson. Wilmer and Stock were brought back in 1965 for twelve more episodes with a supporting cast that included Mary Holder as Mrs Hudson, Peter Madden as Lestrade and Derek Francis as Mycroft Holmes and guest stars such as Peter Wyngarde.
Two episodes have been released on video by the BBC, The Speckled Band and The Illustrious Client.
"I think you could complain that my Holmes was unpleasant. I'm sure that on the face of it...Holmes was unpleasant.... It didn't mean that he had no heart, and in the books, you see, Watson says he has. Watson softened the impact"

One reviewer has described Wilmer's performance as:
"smooth and sardonic without seeming bitchy and rude. He's intelligent and quick on his heels without seeming neurotic and egotistical. All in all, he's exactly what Conan Doyle wrote. Even the physical resemblance to the Sidney Paget illustrations is startling" - a point picked up by a contemporary Times review. Nigel Stock's Watson was seen as more serious and intelligent than audience's familiar with the Nigel Bruce interpretation, a trend begun by Andre Morell in Hammer's Hound of the Baskervilles, and continued by actors such as James Mason and Edward Hardwicke.

Here's a clip from The South Bank Show "The London Underground" recorded by me me in 1987 the programme discussed how the London Underground had inspired the arts. this segment Has the Sherlock Holmes Society of London discussing the location of a murder that happened in the Sherlock Holmes Story "The Bruce Partington Plans" and includes a rare clip from the wonderful Douglas Wilmer BBC dramatisation of which only a fragment of and some soundtrack are known to still exist of this edition of the Wilmer series. The surviving episodes are available on a BBC USA region one DVD available via Amazon. You will need a region one compatible player to play this essential DVD.Wilmer is the only Holmes in my opinion worth comparing to the incomparable Jeremy Brett.

Nigel Hector Munro Stock (21 September 1919 – 23 June 1986) was an English actor of stage, screen, radio and television, who played major character roles in many films and television dramas.Stock was born in Malta, the son of an Army captain. He grew up in India before attending St Paul's School, London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he earned the Leverhulme Exhibition, Northcliffe Scholarship, and the Principal's Medal.
He made his stage debut in 1931, and during his career achieved numerous classical and contemporary credits at various distinguished theatres, including the Old Vic and on Broadway, with productions of The Winter's Tale, Macbeth, She Stoops to Conquer, Uncle Vanya. His start in films came with uncredited bit parts in The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1938) and Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939). In 1937 he made his first credited film appearance in Lancashire Luck.
His acting career was interrupted by wartime service between 1939 and 1945 with the London Irish Rifles and the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army in Burma, China and Kohima. He was honourably discharged with the rank of Major, having twice been mentioned in despatches.
His film appearances included popular releases such as Brighton Rock (1947), The Dam Busters (1955), The Great Escape (1963), The Lion in Winter and The Lost Continent (both 1968), and Russian Roulette (1975).
Between 1964 and 1968, Nigel Stock became a household name in the UK for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in a series of Sherlock Holmes dramas for BBC television. Later in life, he portrayed the mentor of Sherlock Holmes in Young Sherlock Holmes. His other numerous television credits included Danger Man (1965), The Avengers (1964 & 1966), The Prisoner (1967), Owen MD (1971–73), Quiller (1975), Van der Valk (1977), Doctor Who (1982), Yes Minister (1982), Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979) and for the BBC A Tale of Two Cities 1980 television series as well as The Pickwick Papers (1985) as Mr. Pickwick.
Stock and his third wife, Richenda Carey, had just appeared together on stage in the world premiere of Mumbo Jumbo in May 1986, when, on 23 June 1986, he died in London of a heart attack, aged 66.

Douglas Wilmer (born 8 January 1920) is a retired English actor, best known for playing Sherlock Holmes in the 1965 TV series.
Early life
Wilmer was born in London, England, and received his education at King's School, Canterbury, and Stonyhurst College. Whilst in training as an actor at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he was conscripted into the British Army for military service with the Royal Artillery in World War 2. After training he was posted to an anti-tank battery, and saw war service in Africa with the Royal West African Frontier Force. He was later invalided out of the Armed Forces having contracted tuberculosis.
He made his theatre stage debut in 1945 in repertory at Rugby. He appeared frequently on the London stage, mainly in classical and Shakespearean roles. On 16 February 1946 he married Elizabeth Joan Melville in Westminster.
Career
He made his first major film appearance in Laurence Olivier's Richard III (1955); thereafter he appeared in a large number of films, mostly in supporting roles. They include several epic films: as M. Desmoulins in The Battle of the River Plate (1956), as Al-Mu'tamin in el Cid (1961), Cleopatra (1963), The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964), as Khalifa Abdullah in Khartoum (1966), as Maj. Gen. Francis de Guingand in Patton (1970), as Sir Thomas Fairfax in Cromwell (1970), and Antony and Cleopatra (1972). Other appearances include Jason and the Argonauts, the Pink Panther films A Shot in the Dark (1964) and Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), The Vampire Lovers (1970), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974), and Octopussy (1983).

Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes (/ˈʃɜːrlɒk ˈhoʊmz/) is a fictional character created by British author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A London-based "consulting detective" whose abilities border on the fantastic, Holmes is known for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to adopt almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science to solve difficult cases. The character first appeared in print in 1887, and was featured in four novels and 56 short stories by Conan Doyle, as well as later works by other authors. The first novel, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character's popularity grew with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891; additional short-story series and two novels (published in serial form) appeared from then to 1927. The events in the stories take place from about 1880 to 1914.
All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson. Two are narrated by Holmes himself ("The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" and "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane"), and two others are written in the third person ("The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" and "His Last Bow"). In two stories ("The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual" and "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott"), Holmes tells Watson the story from memory, with Watson narrating the frame story. The first and fourth novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear, include long passages of omniscient narrative of events unknown to either Holmes or Watson.

Here's a short amateur interview from the mid 2000's with the veteran actor Douglas Wilmer who played Sherlock Holmes in the superb 1965 BBC series. Douglas Wilmer is described by many in the Society as the Sherlock Holmes. Born January 8th, 1920 in London, and educated at King's, Canterbury, Douglas Wilmer's film debut was in 1954, in Laurence Olivier's Richard III as Dorset. Established as a supporting actor, his best-remembered film role is Nayland Smith in the Christopher Lee Fu Manchu series, when he was cast after Nigel Green declined the part. Produced by David Goddard in 1964, the BBC production of The Speckled Band was the first of Wilmer's appearances as Sherlock Holmes, with Nigel Stock as Watson. Here's a clip from The South Bank Show "The London Underground" recorded by me me in 1987 the programme discussed how the London Underground had inspired the arts. this segment Has the Sherlock Holmes Society of London discussing the location of a murder that happened in the Sherlock Holmes Story "The Bruce Partington Plans" and includes a rare clip from the wonderful Douglas Wilmer BBC dramatisation of which only a fragment of and some soundtrack are known to still exist of this edition of the Wilmer series. The surviving episodes are available on a BBC USA region one DVD available via Amazon. You will need a region one compatible player to play this essential DVD.Wilmer is the only Holmes in my opinion worth comparing to the incomparable Jeremy Brett.

Established as a supporting actor, his best-remembered film role is Nayland Smith in the Christopher Lee Fu Manchu series, when he was cast after Nigel Green declined the part.
Produced by David Goddard in 1964, the BBC production of The Speckled Band was the first of Wilmer's appearances as Sherlock Holmes, with Nigel Stock as Watson. Wilmer and Stock were brought back in 1965 for twelve more episodes with a supporting cast that included Mary Holder as Mrs Hudson, Peter Madden as Lestrade and Derek Francis as Mycroft Holmes and guest stars such as Peter Wyngarde.
Two episodes have been released on video by the BBC, The Speckled Band and The Illustrious Client.
"I think you could complain that my Holmes was unpleasant. I'm sure that on the face of it...Holmes was unpleasant.... It didn't mean that he had no heart, and in the books, you see, Watson says he has. Watson softened the impact"

Nigel Stock's Watson was seen as more serious and intelligent than audience's familiar with the Nigel Bruce interpretation, a trend begun by Andre Morell in Hammer's Hound of the Baskervilles, and continued by actors such as James Mason and Edward Hardwicke.

Between 1964 and 1968, Nigel Stock became a household name in the UK for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in a series of Sherlock Holmes dramas for BBC television. Later in life, he portrayed the mentor of Sherlock Holmes in Young Sherlock Holmes. His other numerous television credits included Danger Man (1965), The Avengers (1964 & 1966), The Prisoner (1967), Owen MD (1971–73), Quiller (1975), Van der Valk (1977), Doctor Who (1982), Yes Minister (1982), Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979) and for the BBC A Tale of Two Cities 1980 television series as well as The Pickwick Papers (1985) as Mr. Pickwick.

Eric Schellow Germany's Sherlock Homes the 1967/8 German Sherlock Holmes series starring Eric Schellow as Holmes and Paul Edwin Roth as Dr Watson. Apparently these 6 black and white (between one hour five minute and slightly under an hour in duration ) programmes used the translated scripts from the 1964 Douglas Wilmer series and appear to have been made on video. the 1967/8 German Sherlock Holmes series starring Eric Schellow as Holmes and Paul Edwin Roth as Dr Watson. Apparently these 6 black and white (between one hour five minute and slightly under an hour in duration ) programmes used the translated scripts from the 1964 Douglas Wilmer series and appear to have been made on video.
I am not a German speaker, but being so familiar with these stories it isn't too difficult to work out what is being said, and these programmes look to be some of the best productions of the Sherlock Holmes stories I have seen - The Speckled Band - The Beryl Coronet - The Copper Beeches - The Six Napoleons - The Red Headed League - The Bruce Partington Plans.
A German Contributor to the excellent Scarlet Street Sherlock Holmes forum wrote this in response to my request for information from German speakers..
Erich Schellow and Paul Edwin Roth were both marvellous stage actors who took their roles with gusto and enthusiasm. However, the director's main interest was to show Holmes as an "Anti-James Bond", without most of Holmes' eccentricities (Schellow wanted to play him drug-addicted, but director Paul May wanted Holmes "clean" in every way). Mrs. Hudson and a few other characters were just played for cheap laughs, which is a pity. Also, the narrative was quite slow. But I like the series, although it could have been much better.
Holmes' deerstalker hat - or the costume designer's idea of it - was rather grotesque, of course.
P.S.: The German Holmes Society, Von Herder Airguns Ltd., published a booklet on the series in 1995, commemorating Schellow's 80. birthday. The title was Schellow Holmes. It's still available via Michael Ross' Baskerville Bcher...............

A história se inicia com o Barão Joachim von Hartog (Douglas Wilmer), um caçador de vampiros em busca de vingança pela morte de sua irmã, preparando uma armadilha no temível Castelo de Karnstein, onde uma família amaldiçoada de vampiros repousa em suas tumbas frias saindo apenas à noite em busca de alimento, o sangue dos aldeões de um vilarejo próximo. Quando uma jovem e bela vampira retorna de sua caçada, é surpreendida por Hartog que se apossa de seu manto, evitando que a criatura da noite possa voltar ao túmulo novamente. Incitando a vampira para um confronto, Hartog a mata através de decapitação, um dos poucos meios possíveis de se destruir um vampiro, e num trabalho exaustivo consegue eliminar os outros familiares em suas covas, cravando-lhes estacas de madeiras nos corações. Porém, o túmulo da bela Mircalla Karnstein (1522 / 1546) estava escondido num local seguro e não foi violado, permitindo que ela possa ressurgir para continuar o legado maldito de sua família em busca de sangue.

Nigel Hector Munro Stock (21 September 1919 – 23 June 1986) was an English actor of stage, screen, radio and television, who played major character roles in many films and television dramas.Stock was born in Malta, the son of an Army captain. He grew up in India before attending St Paul's School, London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he earned the Leverhulme Exhibition, Northcliffe Scholarship, and the Principal's Medal.
He made his stage debut in 1931, and during his career achieved numerous classical and contemporary credits at various distinguished theatres, including the Old Vic and on Broadway, with productions of The Winter's Tale, Macbeth, She Stoops to Conquer, Uncle Vanya. His start in films came with uncredited bit parts in The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1938) and Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939). In 1937 he made his first credited film appearance in Lancashire Luck.
His acting career was interrupted by wartime service between 1939 and 1945 with the London Irish Rifles and the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army in Burma, China and Kohima. He was honourably discharged with the rank of Major, having twice been mentioned in despatches.
His film appearances included popular releases such as Brighton Rock (1947), The Dam Busters (1955), The Great Escape (1963), The Lion in Winter and The Lost Continent (both 1968), and Russian Roulette (1975).
Between 1964 and 1968, Nigel Stock became a household name in the UK for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in a series of Sherlock Holmes dramas for BBC television. Later in life, he portrayed the mentor of Sherlock Holmes in Young Sherlock Holmes. "now bright, now faint, as the burning poison waxed or waned" [TWIS]
After nearly 130 years in print, it seems like the phenomenon of Sherlock Holmes may have peaked. And yet, it's likely that every generation may have thought that - including the one in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was still writing the original stories.
We've often said that every generation has its Sherlock Holmes, and when we move beyond the printed page, it's quite true. From William Gillette to Eille Norwood, Arthur Wontner to Basil Rathbone, Ronald Howard to Douglas Wilmer and Peter Cushing, not to mention Robert Stephenson, Nicol Williamson, Jeremy Brett, Robert Downey, Jr., Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch. These are just a handful of names from two forms of media.
Sherlock Holmes fades but manages to come back, with no sign of abatement. Each time, the fandom receives a shot in the arm and there's a high-water mark left when the tide recedes. Then, it happens again, perhaps increasing slightly. But the interest in the character remains.
