In the history of European art music (broadly called classical music), the common practice period – spanning most of the baroque, classical, and romantic eras – lasted from about 1600 to around 1900. Sometimes, terminologies are reversed with some authorities referring to a common practice era spanning most of the baroque, classical, and romantic periods (Konečni 2009).
Common-practice music obeys two types of musical norms: first, it uses conventionalized sequences of chords, such as I–IV–V–I (see Roman numeral analysis). Second, it obeys specific contrapuntal norms, such as the avoidance of parallel fifths and octaves.
One can contrast common-practice music with the earlier modal music and with later atonal music. Compare also twentieth-century styles, such as rock and jazz, that are broadly tonal but do not obey the harmonic and contrapuntal norms described in the preceding paragraph.
Common-practice harmony is almost always derived from diatonic scales and tends to follow particular chord progressions that have withstood the test of time.
All-star (also stylized as All-Star) is a term designating an individual as having a high level of performance in their field. Originating in sports, it has since drifted into vernacular and been borrowed heavily by the entertainment industry. It can also be used for a group of individuals, who are popular in certain areas.
"All-star" as a sports term refers to individual players named to an "all-star" roster or team representing the top performers during and before the end of a season in a given sport, or to a list of top participants who played in individual sports such as golf and bowling. Events limited to such honorees are referred to as "all-star games" or events.
In American team sports the premier all-star games are the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, NBA All-Star Game, Pro Bowl, NHL All-Star Game, and the MLS All-Star Game. Many all-star teams, such as collegiate "all-conference" and All-America squads, are recognitions of performance only, without the connotation of those selected ever being teammates in a game.
The 20th century was a century that began on January 1, 1901 and ended on December 31, 2000. It was the tenth and final century of the 2nd millennium. It is distinct from the century known as the 1900s (sometimes written as 19XX), which began on January 1, 1900 and ended on December 31, 1999.
Dubbed the "short twentieth century", this century in human history was dominated by chain of events that heralded significant changes in world history as to redefine the era: World War I and World War II, nationalism and decolonization, the Cold War and Post-Cold War conflicts, cultural homogenization through developments in transportation and communications technology, world population growth, awareness of environmental degradation, ecological extinction and the birth of the Digital Revolution. It saw great advances in communication and medical technology that by the late 1980s allowed for near-instantaneous worldwide computer communication and genetic modification of life.
The century had the first global-scale total wars between world powers across continents and oceans in World War I and World War II. Nationalism became a major political issue in the world in the 20th century, acknowledged in international law along with the right of nations to self-determination, official decolonization in the mid-century, and nationalist-influenced armed regional-conflicts.
Sheet music (if for some godforsaken reason you need the sheet music for this): https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxr3sxXr4Cocb2JQempJRkVKZUU/view?usp=sharing All Star by Smash Mouth but it's partwritten for four voices following the compositional rules established by Bach, which include (but are not limited to) sounding every note of a given chord, avoiding parallel motion octaves and fifths, doubling the root of non-inverted chords, resolving leading tones appropriately, and of course, following the established chart of chord progressions to prevent retrogression. And it's fully notated with Roman numeral and figured bass analysis, as well as non-chord tones. It's not perfect okay, crucify me; I know there's some stuff Bach wouldn't have done but I had to keep it interesting. I was going ...

The episode is part one of a new series called "How To Harmonize a Melody" where I will demonstrate Tonal, Linear, Bitonal, Modal and Polytonal techniques. There are rules of counterpoint that were established during the common practice period from 1600-1900 that you can apply Roman Numeral analysis to but only if you want to copy the styles of the masters of those eras. These rules were broken 100 years ago by people like Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. If you want to chart a new course, you must find new rules! I will save common practice videos for the right time but that's not now. I this episode I harmonize a simple 5 note melody G-Bb-Eb-G-F with Linear, Tonal, Bitonal and Polytonal examples.
