9. The Reed Flute Cave – Guangxi, China
This cave is quite the landmark and a major tourist attraction that can be found on the outskirt of the city of Guilin in Guangxi, China. The cave gets its name from the reeds that grow inside it and are perfect for turning them into reeds. Not only that, but you can also find a variety of mineral formations, carbon deposits and stone pillars. The cave was rediscovered back in the 1940s by refugees and is around 180 years old with roughly 70 inscriptions on the walls that go as far back as 792 AD.
8. The Blue Grotto – Capri, Italy
This famous sea cave can be found right on the coast of the island of Capri in Italy where it extends for 177 feet. The sun’s light is able to pass through the underwater cavity and illuminates the ocean’s waters, producing a reflection that makes the cave glow blue. With only one entrance, this cave can only be reached by boat and the passengers must lie flat as the oarsman uses a metal chain to pull the boat into the cave. Visitors are also forbidden to swim in the grotto in order to preserve the clarity of the water.
7. The Lascaux Caves – Montignac, France
This cave is found in the southwestern region of France, where it is more known for the Paleolithic cave paintings that are found inside, which a teenager happened to stumble across them back in the 1940s. The cave art is dated at being around 17,300 years old and is made up of pictures of large animals that once existed during that time period. The caves were opened in 1948 and were made into a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1979.
6. The Cave of Crystals – Chihuahua, Mexico
This cave that can be found in Chihuahua, Mexico was just barely discovered back in 2000 when scientists found the chasm below after they had drilled an aquifer and managed to pump out thousands of gallons of water. The crystal formations mind numbingly huge as they are measured at being way over 30 feet with a diameter of 4 feet. This is because the water that they formed in was overflowing with calcium sulfate and the cave was being heated by magma. The cave is so hot that most people can only stay inside for around ten minutes with the proper protective gear.
5. The Glowworm Cave – Waitomo, New Zealand
This cave at Waitomo is located on the north island of New Zealand and as the name suggests it’s popularly known for the population of glowworms that have made this place their home. This cave happens to be a part of the Waitomo Cave system along with two other caves known as the Aranui and the Ruakuri Cave. The glowworm phenomenon is only unique to New Zealand which is why plenty of tourists pass through here each year.
4. The Eiskogelhöhle Cave
Depicted in the picture below is what’s known as the “Halle de Circe” or as it's translated to “Hall of Circle”. The ice pillars can be found in the Eiskogelhöhle in Salzburg, Austria. The cave was first discovered back in 1877 Eduard Richter. The site was proclaimed as a highly protected site after the passing of the Salzburg Nature Conservation Act.

Eisriesenwelt translates to “World of the Ice Giants,” which is fitting for this cave that is completely made out of natural limestone ice and can be found in Werfen, Austria. It is regarded as the largest ice cave on the planet and goes on for 26 miles. It’s estimated that the caves attract around 200,000 tourists annually that want to catch a glimpse at the ice formations. Whatever the season, these ice formations manage to stay frozen and cool year-round thanks to the area’s special weather conditions.
2. Fingal's Cave – Staffa, Scotland
This is a sea cave that lies on an uninhabited island in Scotland called Staffa. Its formation was brought forth by hexagonally jointed basalt columns inside of a Paleocene lava flow. The cave has established quite a name for itself because of its naturally arched ceiling that creates creepy noises with the help of the sea’s waves echoing.

The cave comes equipped with low temperatures and thick layers of vegetation near. You can also find a sinkhole that is estimated to go down an extra 1679 feet.

While bats and bugs are among the most common denizens of deep, dark caves, supernatural and other particularly chill-inducing inhabitants are said to be occupying a few of them as well.
Here are 10 of the world’s creepiest underground caves.
Number 10. Mammoth Cave. America’s national parks aren’t all about hiking and camping, some offer ghost hunting as well. Among the many spirits said to be roaming about is that of Floyd Collins, an explorer whose leg got pinned by a rock. He perished underground while waiting for help.
Number 9. The Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau. Though great efforts to beautify this locale have been made over the years, the horrors of the genocide that occurred here are still evident. The bones of those killed at the hands of the Khmer Rouge remain in the cave, which served as a repository for the bodies of the slain.
Number 8. Catawba Murder Hole Cave. It is a long drop to the bottom of this underground chamber in Virginia, and its opening is very large. Over the years, many have seen it as an opportunity for adventure, but it is rumored one man used it to get away with murder. He lured his victim to the cave, stole his belongings, then sent him over the edge to his death.
Number 7. Bell Witch Cave. As far as unsettled spirits go, Kate, who occupies this subterranean Tennessee spot, is an especially nasty one. Though she started by terrorizing and even killing people above ground, one popular theory is that she now hangs out mostly below it. Some, however, believe the cave merely serves as a passageway between her netherworld home and the realm of the living.
Number 6. Kabayan Mummy Burial Caves. In the days before both the Spanish and Christianity spread through the Philippines' island of Luzon, mummification was a common practice among some groups. The preserved bodies were stored in remote caverns, and many remain there to this day.
Number 5. Krubera Cave. The dark, cold and wet lower reaches of this more than 7,000-foot Abkhazian tunnel are seldom explored. In the 4 weeks it took one research team to get relatively close to its bottom, they found themselves immersed in deep pools of murky, freezing water, and surrounded by creepy things that defied identification.
Number 4. Gomantong Caves. Geologically speaking, the Borneo cavern’s most immediately notable feature is its 300-foot tall opening. Beyond that, it is best known for the mountains of bat feces and the incredibly high number of cockroaches, centipedes and scorpions amongst them.
Number 3. Ellison’s Cave. Don’t be fooled by its astonishingly beautiful appearance. The pit of this Georgia cave is the deepest known in the US, extending roughly 600 feet below ground level. Attempting to reach its lowest point has been the final act of many explorers and adventurers.
Number 2. Hodge Close Quarry. When viewed from a particular angle, the cave's reflection above the British quarry’s frigid lake resembles a skull. Despite the natural warning sign, many have entered the water. Some never returned. In 2005, a diver reported that he nearly became one of the lost when he, startled by what appeared to be a human body, came up to the surface too quickly.
Number 1. Hellfire Caves. In the mid 1700s, these chalk caves were significantly upgraded by England’s Sir Francis Dashwood, the founder of the Hell Fire club. The membership was comprised largely of aristocrats, but what they did at meetings is not clear. It is rumored they gathered for the purpose of casting spells and partaking in other pagan rituals.

Milarepa's Cave or Namkading Cave is a cave where the great Tibetan Buddhist philosopher, and Vajrayana Mahasiddha, Milarepa (c. 1052—c. 1135 CE), spent many years of his life in the eleventh century, 11 km north of the town of Nyalam, below the roadside and above the Matsang river in Nyalam County, Tibet, China.
Milarepa's cave, which overlooks the entrance to the hidden valley of Lapchi Gang, is entered from the gompa's vestibule. Pilgrim's offerings of decorated stones along the path and sweet-smelling herbs and wild flowers growing all around make this a place of great peace and beauty. The cave itself is kept as a shrine by two monks, guarding a statue of Milarepa enclosed in a glass case. In the cave is an impression in the rock attributed to Milarepa's sitting meditation posture and a hand print said to have been created when Milarepa helped Rechungpa (1083/4-1161 CE), his student, use a boulder to prop up the ceiling. There are images of Milarepa, Tsongkhapa, and Shri Devi, a protectress whose mule is said to have left a footprint in the stone when she visited Milarepa in a vision.

Cave
A cave or cavern is a hollow place in the ground, especially a natural underground space large enough for a human to enter. Caves form naturally by the weathering of rock and often extend deep underground. The word cave can also refer to much smaller openings such as sea caves, rock shelters, and grottos.
Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves and the cave environment. Visiting or exploring caves for recreation may be called caving, potholing, or spelunking.
Types and formation
The formation and development of caves is known as speleogenesis. Caves are formed by various geologic processes and can be variable sizes. These may involve a combination of chemical processes, erosion from water, tectonic forces, microorganisms, pressure, and atmospheric influences.
It is estimated that the maximum depth of a cave cannot be more than 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) due to the pressure of overlying rocks. For karst caves the maximum depth is determined on the basis of the lower limit of karst forming processes, coinciding with the base of the soluble carbonate rocks.

It is a long drop to the bottom of this underground chamber in Virginia, and its opening is very large. Over the years, many have seen it as an opportunity for adventure, but it is rumored one man used it to get away with murder. He lured his victim to the cave, stole his belongings, then sent him over the edge to his death. Number 7. Bell Witch Cave. As far as unsettled spirits go, Kate, who occupies this subterranean Tennessee spot, is an especially nasty one. Though she started by terrorizing and even killing people above ground, one popular theory is that she now hangs out mostly below it. Some, however, believe the cave merely serves as a passageway between her netherworld home and the realm of the living. Number 6. Kabayan Mummy Burial Caves. In the days before both the Spanish and Christianity spread through the Philippines' island of Luzon, mummification was a common practice among some groups. The preserved bodies were stored in remote caverns, and many remain there to this day. Number 5. Krubera Cave. The dark, cold and wet lower reaches of this more than 7,000-foot Abkhazian tunnel are seldom explored. In the 4 weeks it took one research team to get relatively close to its bottom, they found themselves immersed in deep pools of murky, freezing water, and surrounded by creepy things that defied identification. Number 4. Gomantong Caves. Geologically speaking, the Borneo cavern’s most immediately notable feature is its 300-foot tall opening. Beyond that, it is best known for the mountains of bat feces and the incredibly high number of cockroaches, centipedes and scorpions amongst them. Number 3. Ellison’s Cave. Don’t be fooled by its astonishingly beautiful appearance. The pit of this Georgia cave is the deepest known in the US, extending roughly 600 feet below ground level. When viewed from a particular angle, the cave's reflection above the British quarry’s frigid lake resembles a skull. Despite the natural warning sign, many have entered the water. Some never returned. In 2005, a diver reported that he nearly became one of the lost when he, startled by what appeared to be a human body, came up to the surface too quickly. Number 1. Hellfire Caves. In the mid 1700s, these chalk caves were significantly upgraded by England’s Sir Francis Dashwood, the founder of the Hell Fire club. The membership was comprised largely of aristocrats, but what they did at meetings is not clear. It is rumored they gathered for the purpose of casting spells and partaking in other pagan rituals. Milarepa's Cave or Namkading Cave is a cave where the great Tibetan Buddhist philosopher, and Vajrayana Mahasiddha, Milarepa (c. 1052—c. 1135 CE), spent many years of his life in the eleventh century, 11 km north of the town of Nyalam, below the roadside and above the Matsang river in Nyalam County, Tibet, China. Milarepa's cave, which overlooks the entrance to the hidden valley of Lapchi Gang, is entered from the gompa's vestibule. Pilgrim's offerings of decorated stones along the path and sweet-smelling herbs and wild flowers growing all around make this a place of great peace and beauty. The cave itself is kept as a shrine by two monks, guarding a statue of Milarepa enclosed in a glass case. In the cave is an impression in the rock attributed to Milarepa's sitting meditation posture and a hand print said to have been created when Milarepa helped Rechungpa (1083/4-1161 CE), his student, use a boulder to prop up the ceiling. There are images of Milarepa, Tsongkhapa, and Shri Devi, a protectress whose mule is said to have left a footprint in the stone when she visited Milarepa in a vision. 8. The Blue Grotto – Capri, Italy
This famous sea cave can be found right on the coast of the island of Capri in Italy where it extends for 177 feet. The sun’s light is able to pass through the underwater cavity and illuminates the ocean’s waters, producing a reflection that makes the cave glow blue. With only one entrance, this cave can only be reached by boat and the passengers must lie flat as the oarsman uses a metal chain to pull the boat into the cave. Visitors are also forbidden to swim in the grotto in order to preserve the clarity of the water.
7. The Lascaux Caves – Montignac, France
This cave is found in the southwestern region of France, where it is more known for the Paleolithic cave paintings that are found inside, which a teenager happened to stumble across them back in the 1940s. The cave art is dated at being around 17,300 years old and is made up of pictures of large animals that once existed during that time period. The caves were opened in 1948 and were made into a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1979.
6. The Cave of Crystals – Chihuahua, Mexico
This cave that can be found in Chihuahua, Mexico was just barely discovered back in 2000 when scientists found the chasm below after they had drilled an aquifer and managed to pump out thousands of gallons of water. The crystal formations mind numbingly huge as they are measured at being way over 30 feet with a diameter of 4 feet. This is because the water that they formed in was overflowing with calcium sulfate and the cave was being heated by magma. The cave is so hot that most people can only stay inside for around ten minutes with the proper protective gear.
5. The Glowworm Cave – Waitomo, New Zealand
This cave at Waitomo is located on the north island of New Zealand and as the name suggests it’s popularly known for the population of glowworms that have made this place their home. This cave happens to be a part of the Waitomo Cave system along with two other caves known as the Aranui and the Ruakuri Cave. The glowworm phenomenon is only unique to New Zealand which is why plenty of tourists pass through here each year.
4. The Eiskogelhöhle Cave
Depicted in the picture below is what’s known as the “Halle de Circe” or as it's translated to “Hall of Circle”. The ice pillars can be found in the Eiskogelhöhle in Salzburg, Austria. The cave was first discovered back in 1877 Eduard Richter. The site was proclaimed as a highly protected site after the passing of the Salzburg Nature Conservation Act.

Eisriesenwelt translates to “World of the Ice Giants,” which is fitting for this cave that is completely made out of natural limestone ice and can be found in Werfen, Austria. It is regarded as the largest ice cave on the planet and goes on for 26 miles. 9. The Reed Flute Cave – Guangxi, China
This cave is quite the landmark and a major tourist attraction that can be found on the outskirt of the city of Guilin in Guangxi, China. The cave gets its name from the reeds that grow inside it and are perfect for turning them into reeds. Not only that, but you can also find a variety of mineral formations, carbon deposits and stone pillars. The cave was rediscovered back in the 1940s by refugees and is around 180 years old with roughly 70 inscriptions on the walls that go as far back as 792 AD.
8. The Blue Grotto – Capri, Italy
This famous sea cave can be found right on the coast of the island of Capri in Italy where it extends for 177 feet. The sun’s light is able to pass through the underwater cavity and illuminates the ocean’s waters, producing a reflection that makes the cave glow blue. With only one entrance, this cave can only be reached by boat and the passengers must lie flat as the oarsman uses a metal chain to pull the boat into the cave. Visitors are also forbidden to swim in the grotto in order to preserve the clarity of the water.
7. The Lascaux Caves – Montignac, France
This cave is found in the southwestern region of France, where it is more known for the Paleolithic cave paintings that are found inside, which a teenager happened to stumble across them back in the 1940s. The cave art is dated at being around 17,300 years old and is made up of pictures of large animals that once existed during that time period. The caves were opened in 1948 and were made into a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1979.
6. The Cave of Crystals – Chihuahua, Mexico
This cave that can be found in Chihuahua, Mexico was just barely discovered back in 2000 when scientists found the chasm below after they had drilled an aquifer and managed to pump out thousands of gallons of water. The crystal formations mind numbingly huge as they are measured at being way over 30 feet with a diameter of 4 feet. This is because the water that they formed in was overflowing with calcium sulfate and the cave was being heated by magma. The cave is so hot that most people can only stay inside for around ten minutes with the proper protective gear.
5. The Glowworm Cave – Waitomo, New Zealand
This cave at Waitomo is located on the north island of New Zealand and as the name suggests it’s popularly known for the population of glowworms that have made this place their home. This cave happens to be a part of the Waitomo Cave system along with two other caves known as the Aranui and the Ruakuri Cave. The glowworm phenomenon is only unique to New Zealand which is why plenty of tourists pass through here each year.
4. The Eiskogelhöhle Cave
Depicted in the picture below is what’s known as the “Halle de Circe” or as it's translated to “Hall of Circle”. The ice pillars can be found in the Eiskogelhöhle in Salzburg, Austria. The cave was first discovered back in 1877 Eduard Richter. The site was proclaimed as a highly protected site after the passing of the Salzburg Nature Conservation Act.

Here are 10 of the world’s creepiest underground caves.
Number 10. Mammoth Cave. America’s national parks aren’t all about hiking and camping, some offer ghost hunting as well. Among the many spirits said to be roaming about is that of Floyd Collins, an explorer whose leg got pinned by a rock. He perished underground while waiting for help.
Number 9. The Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau. Though great efforts to beautify this locale have been made over the years, the horrors of the genocide that occurred here are still evident. The bones of those killed at the hands of the Khmer Rouge remain in the cave, which served as a repository for the bodies of the slain.
Number 8. Catawba Murder Hole Cave. It is a long drop to the bottom of this underground chamber in Virginia, and its opening is very large. Over the years, many have seen it as an opportunity for adventure, but it is rumored one man used it to get away with murder. He lured his victim to the cave, stole his belongings, then sent him over the edge to his death.
Number 7. Bell Witch Cave. As far as unsettled spirits go, Kate, who occupies this subterranean Tennessee spot, is an especially nasty one. Though she started by terrorizing and even killing people above ground, one popular theory is that she now hangs out mostly below it. Some, however, believe the cave merely serves as a passageway between her netherworld home and the realm of the living.
Number 6. Kabayan Mummy Burial Caves. In the days before both the Spanish and Christianity spread through the Philippines' island of Luzon, mummification was a common practice among some groups. The preserved bodies were stored in remote caverns, and many remain there to this day.
Number 5. Krubera Cave. The dark, cold and wet lower reaches of this more than 7,000-foot Abkhazian tunnel are seldom explored. In the 4 weeks it took one research team to get relatively close to its bottom, they found themselves immersed in deep pools of murky, freezing water, and surrounded by creepy things that defied identification.
Number 4. Gomantong Caves. Geologically speaking, the Borneo cavern’s most immediately notable feature is its 300-foot tall opening. Beyond that, it is best known for the mountains of bat feces and the incredibly high number of cockroaches, centipedes and scorpions amongst them.
Number 3. Ellison’s Cave. Don’t be fooled by its astonishingly beautiful appearance. The pit of this Georgia cave is the deepest known in the US, extending roughly 600 feet below ground level. Attempting to reach its lowest point has been the final act of many explorers and adventurers.

Milarepa's Cave or Namkading Cave is a cave where the great Tibetan Buddhist philosopher, and Vajrayana Mahasiddha, Milarepa (c. 1052—c. 1135 CE), spent many years of his life in the eleventh century, 11 km north of the town of Nyalam, below the roadside and above the Matsang river in Nyalam County, Tibet, China.
Milarepa's cave, which overlooks the entrance to the hidden valley of Lapchi Gang, is entered from the gompa's vestibule. Pilgrim's offerings of decorated stones along the path and sweet-smelling herbs and wild flowers growing all around make this a place of great peace and beauty. The cave itself is kept as a shrine by two monks, guarding a statue of Milarepa enclosed in a glass case. In the cave is an impression in the rock attributed to Milarepa's sitting meditation posture and a hand print said to have been created when Milarepa helped Rechungpa (1083/4-1161 CE), his student, use a boulder to prop up the ceiling. There are images of Milarepa, Tsongkhapa, and Shri Devi, a protectress whose mule is said to have left a footprint in the stone when she visited Milarepa in a vision.
