1. On Serbia's modern-day territory most of the Roman emperors were born after Italy (about one in five). One of them was Constantine, born in Nis, who was the emperor that legalized Christianity.
2. The Skull Tower is a tower composed largely of human skulls located in the city of Niš, Serbia. During the First Serbian Uprising in 1809, Serbian revolutionaries were attacked by Turkish forces on Čegar Hill, near Niš. Rather than be captured by the Turks and executed by impalement, the commander fired his pistol into a powder magazine, killing himself and all Serbian rebels and Turkish soldiers in the vicinity. Afterward the Turkish Grand Vizier of Niš ordered that a tower be made from the skulls of the killed Serbian revolutionaries. Once complete, the ten-foot high Skull Tower contained 952 Serbian skulls embedded on four sides in fourteen rows.
3. Đavolja Varoš (meaning "Devil's Town") is a peculiar rock formation, located in south Serbia on the Radan Mountain near Kuršumlija. It features 202 exotic formations described as earth pyramids or "towers", as the locals refer to them. They are 2-15 m tall and 4-6 m wide at the base.
4. Serbia was a part of the country of Yugoslavia, a country of the southern Slavs. Yugoslavia broke up into six independent states - – Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia. In 1999, NATO bombed Serbia, to stop the civil war that turned to ethnic cleansing and genocide. But even today you can still see the damage from the bombings.
5. The Drina River in the Balkans is possibly one of the most beautiful bodies of water to ever exist. And what sits atop of a rock in the middle of this scenic place is a tiny home that has stood the test of time, adding to the area's intrigue. For over 40 years, this small structure has survived the unpredictable Serbian weather and has become a hot spot for tourists lucky enough to take a dip.
6. Situated in one of Serbia's most picturesque settings–the Uvac River valley–the Uvac Special Nature Reserve is home to 104 species of birds. Another of the reserve's unique features is the Uvac Canyon and its majestically meandering river valley.
7. Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia, means “White Fortress”. The Romans called it Singidunum, the Byzantines wanted it in their empire, the Ottomans ruled over it, the Hungarians craved for it. Belgrade is one of the most known capitals of Europe and its rich history and beautiful architecture make it a prime spot for tourists.

As with most of the larger cities it is actually quite vibrant and filled with activity, despite the cold weather. In Kosovo, Prizren is a good place to travel to and visit. The city is clean, the people friendly and there are plenty of good restaurants available. Within the town are plenty of shops with vendors offering handmade crafts made from a variety of materials including pewter, copper, wood and other locally available materials. I walked up into an ancient fortress that overlooks the city and took a bunch of pictures. I think the Turks built is centuries ago and it lies mostly in ruins today. Kosovo (/ˈkɒsəvoʊ, ˈkoʊ-/;Albanian: Kosova; Serbian Cyrillic: Косово) is a disputed territory and partially recognised state in Southeastern Europe that declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008 as the Republic of Kosovo. While Serbia recognises the Republic's governance of the territory, it still continues to claim it as its own Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija.
Kosovo is landlocked in the central Balkan Peninsula. Its capital and largest city is Pristina. It is bordered by the Republic of Macedonia and Albania to the south, Montenegro to the west, and the uncontested territory of Serbia to the north and east. In antiquity, the Dardanian Kingdom, and later the Roman province of Dardania was located in the region. It was part of Serbia in the Middle Ages, and many consider the Battle of Kosovo of 1389 to be one of the defining moments in Serbian medieval history. After being part of the Ottoman Empire from the 15th to the early 20th century, in the late 19th century Kosovo became the centre of the Albanian independence movement with the League of Prizren. As a result of the defeat in the First Balkan War (1912–13), the Ottoman Empire ceded the Vilayet of Kosovo to the Balkan League; the Kingdom of Serbia took its larger part, while the Kingdom of Montenegro annexed the western part before both countries became a part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after World War I. After a period of Yugoslav unitarianism in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the post-World War II Yugoslav constitution established the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija within the Yugoslav constituent republic of Serbia.

1. On Serbia's modern-day territory most of the Roman emperors were born after Italy (about one in five). One of them was Constantine, born in Nis, who was the emperor that legalized Christianity.
2. The Skull Tower is a tower composed largely of human skulls located in the city of Niš, Serbia. During the First Serbian Uprising in 1809, Serbian revolutionaries were attacked by Turkish forces on Čegar Hill, near Niš. Rather than be captured by the Turks and executed by impalement, the commander fired his pistol into a powder magazine, killing himself and all Serbian rebels and Turkish soldiers in the vicinity. Afterward the Turkish Grand Vizier of Niš ordered that a tower be made from the skulls of the killed Serbian revolutionaries. Once complete, the ten-foot high Skull Tower contained 952 Serbian skulls embedded on four sides in fourteen rows.

The city is clean, the people friendly and there are plenty of good restaurants available. Within the town are plenty of shops with vendors offering handmade crafts made from a variety of materials including pewter, copper, wood and other locally available materials. I walked up into an ancient fortress that overlooks the city and took a bunch of pictures. I think the Turks built is centuries ago and it lies mostly in ruins today. On the Macedonian border thousands of refugees tell their stories of their brutal treatment at the hands of the Serbs. Christopher Hill, criticises Milosevic’s ‘Medieval approach’ to Kosovo. For him, there is no question that NATO are right, Serb ethnic cleansing was and is unacceptable. The problem of what to do next is a tougher call. Military strategists analyse NATO’s options. Macedonian President Gligorov and Chief Justice of the International War Crimes Tribunal, Louise Arbour, discuss the evidence required to indict Milosevic. But defeating him is only one goal. Stability in the Balkans exceed ambitions to topple a dictator. The next battle will be to determine the region’s shape. The Americans want greater unity and fewer borders. But it’s perhaps an impossible reality. Gazmend speaks for many refugees: “I couldn’t live with the Serbs again. How could I after they’ve killed my family.” The outcome of this war may well be an ethnically pure Kosovo, the creation of a new state in Europe and the re-drawing of the frontiers, precisely what nobody wanted.

Serbo-Croat/Nat Yugoslavia's economy is still grappling with the aftermath of the Kosovo crisis. With its infrastructure in ruins following the heavy bombings of the NATO campaign, everyday items such as household essentials and fuel have been rationed. Over half the work force is unemployed and analysts say there little hope of a recovery in the immediate future. Aside from its bombed-out buildings, Belgrade seems like an ordinary European capital - traffic jams, streets packed with pedestrians and cafes full of customers. On 1 april I flew to kosovo for 5 days. I booked a cheap fare in Economy K (284 CHF/return) ;-) But even when the price is horrible high - My choice is and will be in future edelweiss air! The crew of this flight did a really good job - again! So belle air (also flying too from ZRH to Pristina) is really cheap, but it seems like an animal transport there..! Lower seatpitch than easyJet, no food (neither for money) and unkindly crews! On a edelweiss plane you are flying kingly. Enjoy this trip report. You'll have a great view to the famous engines of this A320 ;D And don't forget to listen to the fantastic take off sound ;-) And last but not least: Do not forget to post a little comment.. Yugoslavia's economy is still grappling with the aftermath of the Kosovo crisis.
With its infrastructure in ruins following the heavy bombings of the NATO campaign, everyday items such as household essentials and fuel have been rationed.
Over half the work force is unemployed and analysts say there little hope of a recovery in the immediate future.
Aside from its bombed-out buildings, Belgrade seems like an ordinary European capital - traffic jams, streets packed with pedestrians and cafes full of customers.
Scratch the surface, however, and very little else is normal.
Street vendors sell gasoline in plastic Coke bottles.
Workers receive no monthly salaries, retirees get no pensions.
The state tolerates massive smuggling and tax evasion just to prevent social unrest.
Coming on top of international sanctions, the 78-day allied bombing campaign has given President Slobodan Milosevic's government a perfect scapegoat for the disastrous state of the economy.
When NATO intervened to stop Milosevic's crackdown on the separatist province of Kosovo, the state-run economy already was in trouble because of years of mismanagement and sanctions stemming from earlier wars.
The bombing campaign made it much worse - destroying oil refineries and wiping out much of Yugoslavia's infrastructure.
Now, salaries and pensions, averaging no more than 50 U-S dollars a month, come months late - if at all - because the economy is at a virtual standstill.
More than half the work force, or nearly 2-million (m) people, is unemployed.
Social security and child welfare payments are a year late.
Living standards have dropped to levels akin to the communist days of the early 1960s.
The I-C-R-C and other international aid agencies launched a public kitchen programme aiming to reach 100-thousand most vulnerable people, refugees, and other displaced persons.

"Before the programme was run by the Yugoslav Red Cross for some 14-thousand beneficiaries. Now we have embarked after many assessments in the field, and the programme has been built up to a case load of some 100-thousand persons."

One SpiRIT: the Global Hockey Festival at A.U.K.
On October 11, RIT in collaboration with other campuses held #RITOneSpiRIT event. For the first time American University in Kosovo was also part of One SpiRIT event, which is an effort to connect the Rochester Institute of Technology and its five campuses worldwide through life streaming. A.U.K. campus was connected with other R.I.T international campuses: U.S., RIT Croatia, and Rochester Institute of Technology, Dubai though the advanced Cisco Systems telecommunications technology. This technology enabled students from around the world to interact with each other in real time. The Struggle of Being Gay in Albania
Up until the mid-90s if you were openly gay in Albania, you would be sent to prison. Many homosexuals stil face bigotry and violence, even in their own homes. In the last five years, Albania has seen a dynamic LGBTQ movement. Gay activist have created secret guest houses in Tirana that offer shelter to young homosexuals who have been brutally abused. VICE Greece traveled to Albania and recorded rare glimpses into the lives of people who have been victimized and neglected because of their sexual orientation in one of Europe's most homophobic countries. This event was a tremendous opportunity to bring the #RIT community together as one global family. This festival allowed students to engage with their global classmates and in turn, enabled all students experiencing an important cultural exchange among different RIT campuses.

In addition to all these features, our talented students from the Music Club and Dance Club gave spectacular performances representing some of the main cultural characteristics of #Kosovo.

A psychiatric doctor in Belgrade is warning of an epidemic of mentally ill people following the nightly NATO bombings of the country.
Experts say the number of people on tranquilisers has risen sharply since the military campaign against Yugoslavia began.
Most mental patients in the Serbian capital were discharged and sent home to relatives at the beginning of the air strikes over two weeks ago.
But seriously ill patients who need specialised care stayed behind.
Staff at Belgrade's Institute for Mental Health now go through the nightly routine of settling their 20 remaining patients in a basement shelter to spend the night.
Once air-raid sirens go off, staff and patients carry water, blankets and mattresses to a small room at the bottom of a long flight of stairs.
Conditions are cramped, and facilities basic.
The effect this radical change of routine will have on the long term mental health of these patients, and those that are now temporarily housed with relatives, is not known.
But doctors warn of a wider problem- stress levels in the city's population as a whole are rising rapidly.

"People are tense and stressed. Once when they start relaxing we will have an epidemic of mental cases here. Don't forget that people here have been under constant stress for 5 to 6 years. There are lots of flashbacks, there are lot of refugees from other conflicts in former Yugoslavia, they remember similar situations, similar bombings, similar sirens."

The quiet mountain village of Çabra in the mountains of Kosovo was almost totally destroyed in civil conflict following the disintegration of Yugoslavia.
Villagers swiftly rebuilt their homes, but were left with no local health services. Twenty-year old Selami says getting to the nearest city with a hospital was hard for him and his aging mother.
SOUNDBITE (Albanian) Selami Rama, Çabra Resident :
It was difficult because for any illness you had to go all the way to Mitrovice, now it is much better because the clinic is here.
The building of the new clinic in Çabra is one of the approximately 250 vital infrastructure projects Kosovo has undertaken, with support from the World Banks post-conflict fund.
Çabra resident Fatmire Mehmeti has come to the clinic with her five-year old daughter Aurora, who has a fever:
Fatmire says having medical services nearby is imperative for mothers like herself, especially in the winter months when kids are prone to flu.

Now it is easier, we dont have to go to Mitrovice. But we wish the doctor came everyday and not just twice a week!
Dr. Vllaznim Hoti sees patients at the Çabra clinic two days a week. Those with serious illnesses are sent for treatment at Mitrovice, the nearest city with a hospital.

Residents contributed to the total cost of building the health clinic. Such cooperation and the clinic itself have given people of economically-depressed Çabra an incentive to remain, say community officials.

It is a very strong reason to stay in Çabra because there are the right conditions now in the village.
With the villages health assured, Veseli says he and other village leaders are now focusing on Çabras next pressing issue: creating jobs for its residents.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (U-N-H-C-R) is expressing concern over health and security risks resulting from overcrowding in Macedonian refugee camps.
Such concerns were also voiced by Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe chief monitor, William Walker when he visited the Lojane refugee camp in Macedonia.
Walker says a lot of help is needed to solve hygiene problems and prevent major outbreaks of illness.
Chief Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (O-S-C-E) monitor William Walker visited the Lojane refugee camp in Macedonia on Tuesday.
There he was greeted like a star by many of the refugees, some clamoured to shake his hand while others clapped at his arrival.
After meeting with the refugees and inspecting the camp William Walker said conditions were not good.
He says a lot of help is needed to solve hygiene problems and prevent major outbreaks of illness.

"They are talking about hygiene problems, they're talking about possible epidemics. The water supply is inadequate, people haven't been able to bath for a long, long time, so I think we have to see if we can bring some help to this camp."

William Walker also expressed concern over the fate of refugees who are not crossing the Kosovo-Albanian border at Jazince.
There have been reports that Serb forces are preventing the refugees from crossing.

"Well you know, Mr Milosevic seems to be willing to do anything to stay in power and to subjugate Kosovo but the situation in Kosovo is obviously horrible, we've heard all sorts of numbers about people trying to get out and not being able to. I don't think anyone's got good figures since it's behind an iron curtain there, but this is going to end and these people are going to get back to Kosovo, that's what they want to do."

But the refugees may have to spend many more weeks in camps like Lojane before they can leave and it's the poor health conditions that need to be addressed first.

The U-N said Kosovo's main hospital, Pristina University Hospital, was run directly from the Health Ministry in Belgrade and staffed and administered almost exclusively by Serbs.
But almost every Serb member of staff has left in recent days as Yugoslav forces withdrew and the province's ethnic Albanians began to return from refugee camps in Albania and Macedonia.
Albanian doctors and nurses are returning to work at Pristina hospital on Friday for the first time after a mass exodus of doctors when NATO air strikes first started
British NATO K-F-O-R forces have secured the hospital so that the doctors and nurses can resume their work.
Serb doctors are still working at the hospital but ethnic Albanian doctors are returning to assist Kosovar refugees and other patients who have not received medical attention for the last three months.
Albanian pediatrician Dr. Bardhyll Abrashi says that he is coming back today after three months of not working.

The Kosovo War was an armed conflict between the Albanian Terrorist Paramilitary UCK and the Serb Security Forces. The armed conflict began after provocations on the Serbs and demanding the Serbian province of Kosovo i Metohija to become a republic. After murder of policemen and civil, Serbia sends more troops to liquidate the UCK which was casting danger for both Serbian and ethnic Albanian population. Kosovo: Serb Forces Blast Ethnic Albanians With Mortar Fire - 1998
Natural Sound Serb forces blasted ethnic Albanian separatists with mortar fire on Tuesday, trying to dislodge them from a strategic Kosovo coal mine. Serb police kept access blocked to the besieged area around Belacevac, 10 kilometres (six miles) west of Kosovo's capital, Pristina. The mine, which supplies coal to two power plants, was seized by Albanian separatists last week. Fierce fighting is under way in the area surrounding the strategic Belacevac mine. It's the second day of the Serb security forces' assault on the mine. And the fast-growing Kosovo Liberation Army is not going to let the Serbs regain control of the mine without a fight. The Kosovo War was an armed conflict between the Albanian Terrorist Paramilitary UCK and the Serb Security Forces. The armed conflict began after provocations on the Serbs and demanding the Serbian province of Kosovo i Metohija to become a republic. After murder of policemen and civil, Serbia sends more troops to liquidate the UCK which was casting danger for both Serbian and ethnic Albanian population. UCK was liquidated, but then asked NATO for help.
This footage shows the Serb forces securing Kosovo's perimeters.

Serb police kept access blocked to the besieged area around Belacevac, 10 kilometres (six miles) west of Kosovo's capital, Pristina.
The mine, which supplies coal to two power plants, was seized by Albanian separatists last week.
Fierce fighting is under way in the area surrounding the strategic Belacevac mine.
It's the second day of the Serb security forces' assault on the mine.
And the fast-growing Kosovo Liberation Army is not going to let the Serbs regain control of the mine without a fight.

Throughout the day, Serb tanks rolled up to the edge of a ridge overlooking Belacevac, firing into the village, then rapidly disappearing.
Throughout the surrounding hills, police snipers, cannons and mortars - well-camouflaged in the lush green hills - have all been firing on the KLA-held area.
After a 24-hour bombardment of the area, Serb forces ceased their fire about six in the morning, then resumed it a few hours later after changing their positions.
The Belacevac open-pit mine fell to the ethnic Albanians' Kosovo Liberation Army last week.
The mine is strategically important because it supplies coal to two power stations which provide electricity for the province of Kosovo and the rest of the national grid throughout Serbia.
Despite the Serb army assault, Albanian separatist soldiers - like this one - are determined to fight on.

The fighting came as international envoys urged the two sides to seek a diplomatic solution.

Until recently regarded as a terrorist organisation, it is increasingly supported by the ethnic Albanians, who make up 90 percent of Kosovo's population.
The fighting sent thousands of villagers streaming to neighbouring Albania.
Ethnic Albanians, mostly women and children, fled the besieged area, crowded onto tractors and trucks.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, human rights groups accused the Serbs of rape and other war crimes in the conflict this year.
