Perth's top 8 watering holes revealed in Radio 6PR Pub of the Year

The finalists for Radio 6PR's pub of the year have been announced as a previous winner, The Gate Bar & Bistro failed to make the cut during Karl Langdon's final review for 2016.

"The Gate has won our 6PR pub of the year on four or five occasions, I'm not exactly sure of the number but they should be in the hall of fame," he said.

"I don't think the food was as good as what I've experienced before, so this year... it didn't quite measure up to a couple of the others."

Those others Langdon was referring to are the top eight pubs he visited this year during his quest to uncover Perth's best venue.

All received an impressive 9.5 / 10 rating from the former restauranter.

The "magnificent top eight", are The Inglewood Hotel, The Odin Tavern, The Currambine Bar & Bistro, The Cottesloe Beach Hotel, The Kewdale Tavern, The High Wycombe Tavern, The Duke and The Whistling Kite.

The Inglewood Hotel

Langdon described his visit to the Inglewood Hotel in October as "one of the best experiences I've ever had" and commended its excellent service.

The Odin Tavern

Langdon's visit in May led him to commend the pub for its value for money.

He said you sometimes can't judge a book by its cover, commenting the pub's interior was more impressive than its exterior and called the venue "top class", even leaving a tip.

The Currambine Bar & Bistro

The northern pub emerged as a front-runner for pub of the year in November when Langdon visited on a busy Wednesday at lunch time.

"They're doing 8000 to 9000 covers [meals] a week, it's unbelievably busy," he said.

"There's 30 chefs that work there, it's a big modern venue and one thing you will not be let down by is the food."

The Cottesloe Beach Hotel

Aside from his high praise for the famous pub's food menu, Langdon also fixated on the venue's bathroom facilities.

"There's a vanity bar in the men's - it's got the usual things you might need if you are having a good night and, you know, wanting to protect yourself," Langdon recounted with glee.

"But then there's the enhancing cologne full of pheromones. You give that a little squirt on the neck, nuzzle up and see how you go."

The Kewdale Tavern

A drive-through burger shop on the side of the Kewdale pub impressed Landgon when he visited in June, although he chose to enjoy his meal in the restaurant with wife, Mel.

"It's really great. I've never seen food available at a drive-through before and by the look of the menu the quality of the food is really good," he said.

The High Wycombe Tavern

The former West Coast Eagle's player described this pub as a "beautiful kick" when he visited in May.

"This place had full table service so they are bringing food and drink to your table and you can set up a tab," he said.

"You can then sit and enjoy your company and chat without having to go backwards and forwards to a bar or a server to order your food or drink.

The Duke Bar & Bistro

This new venue in Perth's northern suburbs won Langdon over in July with its traditional British pub feel.

"It was the first time I've been there... but I must say, it was really good," he said.

"I don't know how many TVs are around the joint, but they are clear, crisp, big screens and there is a nice sports bar and pool table in there."

The Whistling Kite

Langdon described the Whistling Kite as a stylish and modern venue south of Perth in Secret Harbour when he visited in June.

He credited the pub for its extensive wine list and large main meals.

The winner of Radio 6PR's Pub of the Year competition will be announced on air on December 21.

Last year, the competition was won by then-new pub, The Ashby Bar and Bistro

At the time Langdon unofficially crowned The Odin Tavern in Balcatta as the best value for money hotel with the quickest service.

An honourable mention went to Byford Tavern for gifting Mr Langdon "the best chicken parmi I've had in years and a beautiful steak sanga."
