Shell creates fuel efficient concept car

Shell teams with Formula One designers to create environmentally friendly concept.

Fuel company Shell wants you to use less of its petrol.

The Dutch company enlisted the help of two of Formula One's most legendary designers to create the ultimate fuel-efficient car, a concept car that uses just 2.6-litres per 100km.

Legendary car designer Gordon Murray, who worked for Brabham and McLaren in the 1980s, and engine guru Osamu Goto, who lead Honda and Ferrari's F1 programs, teamed up create the Shell concept. It is based on Murrary's 2010 T25 concept, a tiny three-seat city car that has been designed with future mega-cities in mind.

Murray, who also designed the iconic McLaren F1 road car, developed the T25 to showcase his revolutionary iStream construction technology that is designed to provide maximum efficiency throughout the car making process.

For the Shell-backed concept, Goto's Geo Technology company improved the efficiency of the car's three-cylinder engine by using specially designed lubricants from Shell. The fuel efficiency has been tested against similar sized conventional petrol and hybrid cars and according to the company produced 32 per cent less CO2 than the hybrid.

"This is a significant automobile engineering milestone," explained Mark Gainsborough, executive vice president of Shell's global lubricants businesses.

"I'm very proud of what Shell's scientists and their partners at Geo Technology and Gordon Murray Design have achieved. Insights gained from this project could be transformational in terms of how we address energy use in the road transport sector. Energy use and climate change are major issues for society. This project shows that if we use the best of today's technology, including cutting edge lubricants science, we could potentially have a major impact on energy use and reduce CO2 emissions."
