Q&A;: Should my tyre pressures keep dropping?

Mark Short

What to do if your tyre pressure warning light comes on.

Q. My cars tyre pressure monitoring system warns me every couple of months I have low pressure, I then have to adjust my tyre pressures and re-set the monitor which is annoying. Is normal to get low tyre pressures every couple of months?

Sarah

A. Tyres naturally lose pressure because the rubber is porous, which is why it's recommended to check your pressures regularly, at least once a month when they are cold. Some tyre pressure warning systems are notorious for throwing up false warnings - when the tyre isn't low on pressure or deflating, something that can be very frustrating. We would recommend having a tyre specialist check this out, they will check your tyres and valves for any damage causing more than natural loss of pressure. They will also be able to check your vehicle's wheels for a buckle that may cause a slow leak through the tyres bead or a hair line crack in the wheel itself.
