Where are the best places to hang a pendant light?

Pendant lights are powerful decorative accessories that can add character to any room. Use them to contrast colour, add symmetry, draw the eye up and around, create intimacy, and even add sparkle to shiny surfaces. Since a hanging light sits lower than usual ceiling lights, pendants look best in rooms with high ceilings – usually entries, hallways, staircases and kitchens, although bedrooms and other living areas can still benefit from the addition of a pendant light (or cluster!). In the bedroom, they can be used to replace a bedside lampshade, freeing up valuable table space, while in kids rooms they can add a sense of play.

How should I hang pendant lights?

In large and expansive rooms, pendant lights can give your eyes something to focus on. Hang them low if you want to create a cosy nook, or cluster pendants together to create drama. In an open-plan space they can also help to create zones and visual separation. Hang them over a dining table, for instance, and think of them as a unique accessory to that part of the home. If you want to fill a tall space, such as a stairwell, consider linking pendant lights together to make the most of the height. And, if your pendants will be functioning as task lighting over something like a kitchen benchtop, use enough lights to illuminate the entire space, and ensure they are evenly distributed.
