The Australian Press Council was established in 1976 and is responsible for promoting good standards of media practice, community access to information of public interest, and freedom of expression through the media.

The Press Council is also the principal body with responsibility for responding to complaints about Australian newspapers, magazines and associated digital outlets.

Prizes for Journalism Students
The Press Council, in association with the Journalism Education and Research Association of Australia, has awarded the first of its new prizes for excellence in journalism studies. Details here.

Adjudications
The latest adjudications concern a letter to the editor published with personal details in the Bendigo Weekly and an article in The Sun-Herald which disclosed a deceased man's HIV status.
