Metter, Georgia
Metter is a city in Candler County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,130 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Candler County.
History
Metter was founded in 1889. In 1914, Metter was designated seat of the newly formed Candler County. Metter was incorporated as a town in 1903 and as a city in 1920.
Geography
Metter is located near the center of Candler County at 32°23′47″N 82°03′45″W / 32.396253°N 82.062414°W / 32.396253; -82.062414, in eastern Georgia. Interstate 16 touches the southern edge of the city, leading east 63 miles (101 km) to Savannah, and west 102 miles (164 km) to Macon. A short, tree-lined parkway leads from I-16 to the downtown area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Metter has a total area of 7.9 square miles (20.4 km2), of which 7.7 square miles (19.9 km2) is land and 0.19 square miles (0.5 km2), or 2.53%, is water.
Longtime residents use the slogan "Everything's Better in Metter".
Metter may be best known as the home of "The Sower", Michael Guido, who has delivered short evangelical PSAs on late-night television nationwide for decades. Dr. Guido's messages were filmed at Guido Gardens, which houses a public botanical garden and a school of ministry. Guido died at the age of 94 on February 22, 2009. His messages were aired on TV stations in the Georgia and South Carolina region.

Ma come sarebbe, davvero, allevare un'intelligenza artificiale nel mondo contemporaneo, nell'era di internet fatta di società startup, di giochi di ruolo online, di software open source?
Ted Chiang racconta la storia di due persone e del loro particolarissimo "cucciolo", descrivendo i particolari ma inevitabili problemi che dovranno affrontare, come gli aggiornamenti dell'hardware e l'obsolescenza del software. Contemporaneamente l'autore propone una riflessione sulla reale differenza tra intelligenza e potenza di calcolo e su cosa significhi davvero rapportarsi con un'entità artificiale.

Un uomo sconosciuto si proclama come il rapitore di Alice. Se Alan vuole rivedere sua moglie dovrà farsi trovare a mezzanotte al Lover's Peak. Alan non vuole aspettare un secondo di più. All'uscita dall'ufficio dello sceriffo trova il dottor Emil Hartman, lo psicologo degli artisti. Egli gli rivela che il suo intero viaggio a Bright Falls è stata una vacanza organizzata da lui e sua moglie per spingerlo a farsi mettere sotto analisi e superare il proprio "blocco", pertanto gli propone di alloggiare nella propria "struttura". Alan, furente, lo colpisce, e dopo questo atto sta per essere arrestato. Per fortuna irrompe nella stanza Barry Wheeler, il suo manager, e lo aiuta ad evitare una denuncia. Barry, preoccupato perché non riusciva a contattare Alan ed Alice da una settimana, si è precipitato a Bright Falls a vedere che succede. Mentre accompagna lo scrittore all'alloggio che gli ha trovato, si fa raccontare tutto. Alan lo fa, ma Barry, eccetto la parte del rapimento della moglie, lo prende per esaurito.
La notte arriva, ed Alan lascia Barry al nuovo cottage per andare all'appuntamento. L'"oscura presenza" non tarda a manifestarsi, e miete subito una vittima. Si tratta di Rusty, il guardiacaccia locale. L'"oscura presenza" lo ha attaccato e ferito gravemente. Appena vede Alan, gli chiede aiuto, dicendogli che si è avverato ciò che aveva letto in una pagina di un manoscritto trovata nei boschi. Lo scrittore non fa in tempo ad aiutarlo. L'"oscura presenza" irrompe e divelle la parete della baita. Dopo pochi istanti, Rusty ricompare sotto forma di posseduto, ed Alan è costretto ad ucciderlo. Inorridito, corre verso il luogo dell'appuntamento braccato da orde di posseduti.
Un uomo sbuca dalla foresta e cerca di aiutarlo. Alan non lo conosce, ma ne riconosce la voce: è il rapitore di Alice. Alan lo aggredisce, e l'uomo dice di "aver letto tutto", e che Alan ha bisogno di un "controllo editoriale". La condizione del rapitore è semplice: Alan gli porta il manoscritto entro due giorni e lui gli restituisce Alice. Ma Wake si fa prendere dall'ira e colpisce l'uomo, che fugge nella foresta. Mentre lo insegue riceve una chiamata da Barry: ha visto anche lui l'"oscura presenza" ed è terrorizzato. A malincuore, abbandona la ricerca per aiutare il suo amico.
All'improvviso arriva una telefonata di Rose, una giovane del luogo. Ha lei il manoscritto. Ma la sua voce è strana. Dentro l'appartamento di Rose c'è soltanto oscurità. Accanto a lei c'è la misteriosa donna vestita di nero. L'oscurità la sta controllando.
