The lure of the lurid neon light glowing from dusk and prior to sunset the sky is magical before night begins. This moment where artificial light mixes with nature is precisely what Jim Thalassoudis has been capturing on canvas with all its beauty, subtlety and extreme detail. However, these luminous paintings of vintage neon signs are more than a homage to beauty, they capture and preserve a memory of a place and of a time.

Jim Thalassoudis is a well-known Australian artist with a growing international reputation. With 43 solo exhibitions and over 250 group shows to his name, he has exhibited in all major cities in Australia, as well as exhibiting in New York, San Francisco, Hong Kong and Singapore. His paintings are in numerous public collections, including The Art Gallery of SA and private collections worldwide.

Thalassoudis' oil paintings are painstakingly painted, each taking hundreds of hours to complete in an attempt to make them more real than real. Neon light is so seductive and mesmerising to us that what started out as advertising has over time endeared itself to our hearts and become intrinsic to our sense of place. These neon signs, having transcended their intended purpose, have now become artefacts of human culture.

Little Audrey, The Skipping Girl neon sign, has become one of Melbourne’s most well-known and loved icons. So has The Pink Poodle Motel neon sign in the Gold Coast and the Dandy Pig neon sign in Dandenong. The products these neon signs once advertised are no longer made, but the generations that have grown up seeing the signs have assigned memories to past encounters with them a new meaning that is now all their own.

“Jim Thalassoudis' work is nostalgic, a meeting place of animation and art. It reminds us how a world was seen in advertising in the past and how we can experience it in new ways now.”
