Serena Williams produced a commanding serving performance to seal a 6-3 6-4 win over Lucie Safarova and book her place in the third round of the Australian Open.
Having struggled to get into the match early though, Thompson stuck with the Austrian all the way through the thirdĀ set and into a tiebreak, which he won 8-6.
"Great experience, playing a top 10 player. He taught me a lesson in those first two sets but I hung in there," Thompson said.

"I was battling to win games in the third set but managed to keep holding serve and sneak that set.
"He came out on fire at the start of he fourth set. I still hung in there pretty well and kept it close.

"I always pride myself on doing my best and I told myself to hang in there. I did it the other day and that was pretty much it, just hang in there."
The result was a bittersweet end to a summer that saw him beat David Ferrer in Brisbane before losing to Kei Nishikori in a quarter final, before his come-from-behind win over Joao Sousa on Tuesday that felt even better.

"It's confidence-boosting. I made quarters of Brisbane and won the doubles there. I played all right in Sydney and came here and played some more good tennis," said Thompson.
