Liberals commit to $37 million WA home of football in Ashfield if re-elected

The State Government has announced plans for a $37 million State Football Centre to be built in the north eastern suburb of Ashfield, if it's re-elected at the March state election.

Ashfield Reserve on Guildford Road will include a grandstand for up to 4,000 spectators, including 700 permanent seats, and an administration centre for Football West - with the possibility of Perth Glory being a tenant.

Barnett announces plans for $37 million soccer centre

WA Premier Colin Barnett has announced a new $37 million State Football Centre in Ashfield if re-elected in the March state election.

The plans include two floodlit playing fields, at least one of which would be synthetic turf along with change rooms, a gymnasium and a sport science component to support development programs and A-League training.

"It is arguably the most-played team sport in WA, and yet is the only major sport in the State that does not have a dedicated administration and training facility," Premier Colin Mr Barnett said on Friday.

"Of Football West's 44,000 registered players 15 per cent are women, which is an indication of the growing popularity of the sport."

Glory CEO Peter Filopoulos said the funding commitment was long overdue.

"We have worked alongside Football West to build a strong business case to enable the sport to grow and foster for many decades to come in WA," he said.

The facilities also have the potential to operate as training grounds for any international sides that visit WA.
