Solid-surface backsplashes. We are looking for kitchens that are easier to keep clean. Solid surfaces are easier to wipe down than grouted tile. I think we are also looking for a serene and uncluttered look. Taking the backsplash all the way up to the wall cabinets accomplishes that in one way, but using a solid surface with no seam lines — or just a couple — provides a very sleek look.

These glossy white beauties are from Ikea (Akurum Abstrakt) and are accented with angular dark bronze pulls from Rocky Mountain Hardware. The showstopping herringbone marble backsplash is fashioned out of 2- by 8-inch Calacatta Michelangelo tiles. HanStone quartz (Aurora Snow) covers the countertops. The lesson here? It’s OK to splurge in some areas and save in others.

Stainless steel counters borrow style from a commercial kitchen, while the tiny scale of the shiny metal backsplash tiles add sophistication. The sculptural piece recalls the found-object type of work one might spy in a Brooklyn Modern style home.

Typical installation instructions require the installer to use a new saw blade (the type specified varies) with the metal side facing upward to minimize spurs in the metal finish. If your backsplash installation ends in the middle of the wall instead of a corner, any cut tile pieces will show the porcelain or resin body. Some manufacturers make coordinating trim pieces with a finished edge, called a bullnose, to hide the raw edge of the cut tile.

Creamy white cabinets are a great way to brighten up a kitchen while also adding warmth and style. Here, instead of using snow white cabinetry, off-white was used which is more in harmony with the golden tan countertops and backsplash.
