In 1649, King Charles I was brought before a high court of justice at Westminster Hall on charges of treason after the Civil War against Parliamentarian forces; in 1841 representatives of Britain and China signed the Convention of Chuanbi, which ceded Hong Kong to the British; in 1942 Reinhard Heydrich chaired the Wannsee Conference, which established the organisational framework for the “Final Solution of the European Jewish Question”; in 1958, led by Dr Vivian Fuchs, the 11-strong British contingent of the joint Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic expedition reached the South Pole; in 1961, John F Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th president of the United States; in 1987, Terry Waite, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s special envoy in Lebanon, was kidnapped there while trying to negotiate the release of hostages; in 2002, photographs from US military base Camp X-Ray in Cuba sparked outrage over human rights abuses.
Nature notes
On bright, sunny mornings there is now quite a chorus of song from the great tits in woods, farmland hedgerows and gardens. They do not appear to mind how cold it is, provided that there is sunshine. Their main song is the well-known, loud “teacher, teacher”, steadily repeated, although this can have many variants. Coal tits are also singing, and their song closely resembles the great tit’s. However, the coal tit’s song is more sweet and piping — not so bold and sharp as the great tit’s — and one can learn to distinguish it. Coal tits are small grey birds with a buffish underside, but their most distinctive feature is their black cap with a long white patch running down their nape. The latter is very conspicuous from behind when they hang on a twig to pick up insects, or on bird feeders — which they often visit. In the trees they are very lively, and make explosive bursts of call-notes quite unlike those of any other tit.
