Coolum Beach residents were bracing for an uncertain night as 26 fire crews battled an out of control blaze which had also spread into Peregian Springs late on Thursday night.
QFES superintendent Mark Stewart said the blaze was "quite intense" and had sent a large plume across a "substantial distance." He said crews would work through the night and SES crews were doorknocking to advise residents of the watch and act warnings.
Residents at Arcoona Road and Doonan Bridge Road were evacuated as the fire swept north east through the national park and QFES warned property could be lost, and that power, water and mobile phone supplies may also be impacted overnight.
Anyone with respiratory issues was advised to keep their doors and windows closed.
Emergency crews were called to the scene of the bushfire that started near Cinnamon Avenue and Banksia Avenue about 1pm on Thursday.
Police declared an emergency at 4.25pm as fire crews struggled to get the blaze under control.
Residents at Arcoona Road and Doonan Bridge Road were evacuated from their homes, as the fire swept north east through the national park.
The Sunshine Motorway was closed on Thursday afternoon, and was expected to remain closed until some time on Friday morning.
The Coolum industrial estate was also evacuated as the fire jumped the Sunshine Motorway.

EARLIER
Police have declared an emergency situation at Coolum Beach as firefighters continue to battle the Sunshine Coast grassfire.
More than 15 emergency crews, including two water tankers and nine rural fire crews, were on scene fighting the vegetation fire that broke out near Cinnamon Avenue and Banksia Avenue at Coolum Beach about 1pm.
The emergency situation encompasses the area bordered by David Low Way, Springfield Avenue, Cinnamon Avenue, Park Crescent and Coolum Yandina Road.
Firefighters were asking residents in the emergency area to watch and act and put any bushfire plans in place.
Those who didn't have a bushfire plan had been asked to evacuate.
Residents at Arcoona Road and Doonan Bridge Road had been evacuated from their homes, west of the national park.
A police spokesman said several homes may be at risk of the bushfire, which was moving north-west.
Workers at the Coolum industrial estate were also evacuated as the fast-moving fire jumped the Sunshine Motorway earlier on Thursday afternoon.
Urban firefighters were at the industrial estate working to protect businesses as rural firefighters battled the blaze from the eastern side of the national park to prevent it spreading to nearby homes.
Motorists were being diverted off the Sunshine Motorway motorway onto Yandina Coolum Road and police urge everyone to stay away the emergency area.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said most of the fire was contained within the national park area, however the fire was burning in several different directions.
