Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (/ˈɡətə/;German: [ˈjoːhan ˈvɔlfɡaŋ ˈɡøːtə]; 28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German writer and statesman. His body of work includes epic and lyric poetry written in a variety of metres and styles; prose and verse dramas; memoirs; an autobiography; literary and aesthetic criticism; treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour; and four novels. In addition, numerous literary and scientific fragments, more than 10,000 letters, and nearly 3,000 drawings by him are extant. A literary celebrity by the age of 25, Goethe was ennobled by the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, Karl August in 1782 after first taking up residence there in November 1775 following the success of his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. He was an early participant in the Sturm und Drang literary movement. During his first ten years in Weimar, Goethe served as a member of the Duke's privy council, sat on the war and highway commissions, oversaw the reopening of silver mines in nearby Ilmenau, and implemented a series of administrative reforms at the University of Jena. He also contributed to the planning of Weimar's botanical park and the rebuilding of its Ducal Palace, which in 1998 were together designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

http://www.iep.utm.edu/goethe/ Goethe defies most labels, and in the case of the label 'philosopher' he did so intentionally. "The scholastic philosophy," in his opinion, "had, by the frequent darkness and apparent uselessness of its subject- matter, by its unseasonable application of a method in itself respectable, and by its too great extension over so many subjects, made itself foreign to the mass, unpalatable, and at last superfluous" (Goethe 1902, 1: 294). But it is nothing exceptional for a philosopher to disdain the character of what is passed along under the name philosophy by professional academics. If Diogenes, Montaigne, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Sartre, or Rorty, can be considered philosophers, then it may even be a rule that to reject the appellation is a condition of having ea...

This half-hour German film, narrated in English, covers the early career of famed German literary figure Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, including his early success with the novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” The film employs reenactments and visits to the sites where Goethe lived and worked, including Frankfurt, Leipzig and Weimar. Archival illustrations are also used. Scenes from “Faust” are staged by actors, in German with no translation. Goethe’s romantic disappointments are covered as well.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, born August 28, 1749, in Frankfurt on the Main, Germany, was a German poet, novelist, and playwright, considered the greatest German literary figure of the modern era. Goethe was the important figure of European Neoclassicism and Romanticism in the late 18th and early 19th century. His work includes poetry written in a variety styles, prose and verse drama, memoirs, autobiographies, literary criticism and novels. His two most famous works are Faust and the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. In German-speaking countries, his position was so dominant that, since the end of the 18th century, his works were considered as classical. Goethe is the only German writer who managed to reach the fame of Germany’s supreme philosophers and composers. His writings were the...
Animate Earth is a documentary film written and presented by Dr Stephan Harding, renowned ecologist and colleague of James Lovelock. Stephan puts forward a radical approach to the ecological crisis by arguing that many of the problems we now face stem from having lost our intuitive relationship with nature. Stephan believes that traditional mechanistic science has inadvertently fuelled the crisis and that we urgently need to develop an expanded science that cultivates intuitive wisdom alongside rational knowledge so that we can experience everything, from the smallest microbes to our planet's great life-sustaining cycles, as deeply interconnected. The film features interviews with leading environmentalists, scientists and spiritual leaders, including Brian Goodwin, Iain McGilchrist, Fritj...

We can't form our children on our own concepts; we must take them and love them as God gives them to us. Nothing shows a man's character more than what he laughs at. A really great talent finds its happiness in execution. Fresh activity is the only means of overcoming adversity. I can tell you, honest friend, what to believe: believe life; it teaches better that book or orator. Dream no small dreams for they have no power to move the hearts of men.
It is an epic story whose scope could not be greater: From heaven to a witch's kitchen, from university to a cellar pub in Leipzig, Goethe's FAUST - THE FIRST PART OF THE TRAGEDY explores the human condition in all its fascinating habitats. This book was never meant to be published but somehow it got published. Also known as the "Roman Elegies," Erotica Romana is von Goethe's literary tribute to human sexuality and eroticism. Written in 24 elegies to emulate classical Roman elegy writers such as Tibullus, Propertius, and Catullus, von Goethe creates a lyrical work of art that has often been subject to censorship.

FAUST by Goethe - FULL AudioBook | Greatest Audio Books (Faust 1) Faust is the protagonist of a classic German legend; a highly successful scholar but one dissatisfied with his life who therefore makes a pact with the Devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. The Faust legend has been the basis for many literary, artistic, cinematic, and musical works that have reinterpreted it through the ages. Faust and the adjective Faustian imply a situation in which an ambitious person surrenders moral integrity in order to achieve power and success for a delimited term.[1] Translated as "fist" in High German, the name "Faust" suggests someone who resorts to extraordinary means to achieve goals, akin to if not actually involving force; it also implies unusual tenacity a...

But then Lotte (Miriam Stein) enters his life and nothing is the same as before. However, the young lovers are unaware that her father has already promised Lotte's hand to another man. Using Goethe's Theory of Colors (Zur Farbenlehre) as a point of departure, LIGHT, DARKNESS, AND COLOURS takes us on a fascinating journey through the universe of colors. In 1704 Sir Isaac Newton published "Light and Refraction," his study of the interactions between sunlight and prisms. Newton was, as a good scientist, intent on achieving objectivity, which meant studying sunlight in isolation. He thought colors were contained solely in light, and found what he was looking for. Goethe found another, hidden set of colors missed by Newton, by testing Newton's theory, though inclusive of the subjectivity of Human perception. Goethe found the hidden colors in the boundaries between light and darkness. He felt, as an artist, that one could not talk about light without including darkness. Call...

I decided to do two new things today. The first is to bring a name for music to you all: Lichtträger. Introduced to me by Myuuji, Lichtträger created the wonderful Evelyn Evelyn song that I used in my 100th video. Go show him some love: https://www.youtube.com/user/MineZomb3 The other is to bring a poem by an author who rarely if ever graces the normal rounds: Johannn Wolfgang Von Goethe. Better known for his work "Faustus" Originally in German as Totentaz, this poem can be found here http://german.about.com/library/bltotentanz.htm
VON KNASICK has blended the stanzas of this famous poem with original music to honor this great piece of German literature written by Wolfgang von Goethe. The double album, The Faustian Pact, offers a metal version and instrumental counterpart to each original track, the metal versions are inspired by Linkin Park, Celldweler, Circle of Dust,Venom, Iron Maiden, Wumpscut, and Running Wild. The instrumental versions try to harness the neo-classical energy that made the Basil Poledouris Conan movie soundtracks so timeless, while conveying an uplifting emotional mood as with tracks by Yanni. Like it or hate it, "[h]eard melodies are sweet, but those unheard [a]re sweeter, therefore, ye soft pipes, play on" (John Keats).

http://www.iep.utm.edu/goethe/ Goethe defies most labels, and in the case of the label 'philosopher' he did so intentionally.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (August 28, 1749 March 22, 1832) was a German writer, scientist, philosopher and linguist. He has been called "The last true polymath to walk the earth." Music is "Wintersun" by Bond.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (German pronunciation: [ˈjoːhan ˈvɔlfɡaŋ fɔn ˈɡøːtə], 28 August 1749 -- 22 March 1832) was a German writer, pictorial artist, biologist, theoretical physicist, and polymath. He is considered the supreme genius of modern German literature. His works span the fields of poetry, drama, prose, philosophy, and science. His Faust has been called the greatest long poem of modern European literature. His other well-known literary works include his numerous poems, the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther. Goethe was one of the key figures of German literature and the movement of Weimar Classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; this movement coincides with Enlightenment, Sentimentalism (Empfindsam...

A lecture presenting J.W.Goethe's Approach to Colour, in 4 parts. (Part 2 follows at http://youtu.be/C6MI0FG8Pc4 ) This first part deals with Goethe's experiments with a glass prism and the colour spectra he then observed. Part 2 deals with afterimages, simultaneous contrast and coloured shadows. Part 3 deals with colour phenomena in nature, part 4 with emotional and aesthetical aspects of colour. It is a shortened version of a lecture given at the KTH School of Architecture, Stockholm, in January 2012. Quotations are from the English translation by Charles Lock Eastlake, from 1840. More on Goethe´s colour theory and its relation to Newton´s theory of light and colour can be found on http://pscolour.eu

Will you try to justify the meaning, of the note you sent
this evening, to my door your not deceiving me
I'd of thought that you'd have known me better, sending
round an unsigned letter, facing you would be much better
now.
Is it just that you can't face the future with me, can't
you tell me to my face
You just took the cowards way to say good-bye, how would
you feel here in my place?
If at last I think I'm glad, to rid myself of you I'm
sad, to think about the time I let you go
Then I turn and walk away, so please don't beg for me to
stay, cause I know just what I
will say to you
Is it just that you can't face the future with me, can't
you tell me to my face
You just took the cowards way to say good-bye, how would
you feel here in my place?
Tell me to my face your leaving now
