A living room is the hub of the home because it’s here that you spend most of your time. Not only is it a place to watch TV, play games and spend quality time with family, but it’s also somewhere you can read, relax and entertain in. A successful living room design is inviting and encourages conversation, so include a comfortable sofa and coffee table in the space, and create a focal point with the likes of an entertainment unit of fireplace. How do I plan a living room design?

The living room photos on Houzz are a great place to start. Use them as a source of inspiration, and save your favourites to an ideabook. Remember that you can share your ideabooks with everyone involved in your home project for easy collaboration! Collating images of your favourite living room designs – you can do this for general layouts, and for more specific features like a sofa, armchair or side table – will also help your renovation contractor determine what you want to achieve.

How should I arrange my living room?

Living rooms come in all shapes and sizes, so no one arrangement will work for everyone. A long, narrow lounge room, for example, looks best with small furniture items like a two-seater settee, with various focal points throughout the space. An open-plan layout – where the kitchen, dining and living blend into one another – will, instead, require some definition, which can be created with an area rug. Regardless of the size or layout of your space, it’s best to always start with a focal point, and then work outwards. This will pull the room together, and can be in the form of a TV, coffee table, or even a piece of art.

How do I decorate my living room?

The living room is a great place to show off your personality, but to ensure it can adapt to your changing style, stick to neutral walls, and key furniture items such as a sofa and ottoman. You can always add colour and patterns through mid-scale items and accessories such as rugs, cushions, throws, mirrors, lamps and artwork. Your colour scheme should also tie in with your furniture and focal point. If you want a modern living room design, opt for block colours, clean lines and feature lighting. For something more traditional, choose soothing neutrals and lots of textures. Lighting is also a great way to set the mood, and can be a design feature in itself.
