A strange smell reported near Flinders Street Station has led to the discovery of a mystery substance being dumped into the Yarra River.
Commuters noticed the odd odour lingering around one of the Southbank footbridges on Wednesday.
The Environment Protection Authority said it then discovered a cloudy brown substance had been leaking into the river from near the train station.

"The EPA officer did not detect any sheen or odour associated with the discharge while at the site," an EPA spokeswoman said.

But a water sample later found the discharge was likely sediment, she said.
Nearby construction sites are now being examined as a possible source of the river pollution.
Train operator Metro said its staff were also looking into it and hoped to provide more information later.
