District 25 comprising mainly Kranji and Woodlands forms the very direct link between Singapore and Malaysia via the Causeway, explaining the crowds drawn to the bus interchanges for short weekend trips to Malaysia. The district also forms an important component of Singapore’s cultural history as a significant battleground during the Second World War where soldiers sent from Australia, New Zealand and the British Commonwealth sacrificed their lives defending Singapore. This very event has been marked by the Kranji War Memorial as the resting place for these soldiers honouring their services rendered to the Singapore nation. In addition, Woodlands got its name from the rubber plantations in the early days, which is widely known as the main entryway to Malaysia via the Causeway that is always jammed with thousands of workers and visitors.
Today, Kranji is home to the Singapore Turf Club that operates Kranji Racecourse, the only horse race course in Singapore. Other main highlights within Kranji include the Kranji Reservoir which is popular among fishing enthusiasts, as well as the Bollywood Veggies which is an organic farming collective and information centre. The Kranji Industrial Estate also forms the main source of support for the construction industry as several businesses like Huationg Inland Transport and SMRT Bus Limited reside here.
Contrary to the commercially-driven region of Kranji, Woodlands serves as a major residential area that houses several HDB apartments and condominiums like Woodgrove Condo, La Casa and Forestville. A wide variety of amenities scatter across Woodlands and Admiralty to promote a holistic lifestyle that facilitates one’s health, education and leisure. These include the Woodlands Regional Library, Causeway Point, the Woodlands Stadium and Woodlands Swimming Complex and not forgetting a wide range of prominent schools like Republic Polytechnic, the Singapore Sports School and Innova Junior College. As opposed to the common conceptions of Woodlands as an elusive and boring area of Singapore in the past, experimental styles of architecture have been explored and implemented within Woodlands, developing it to provide its current vibrant milieu. Housing apartment blocks no longer are as plain as their prior counterparts but are accompanied by the garnish of parks, communal gardens and decors. Today, the centrepiece of Woodlands that is Woodlands Square has attracted a constant flow of visitors allured by the modernity and vibrancy of Woodlands.
