Sudan (Arabic: السودان as-Sūdān, English pronunciation (US) i/suˈdæn/, (GB) /suːˈdɑːn/), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), is a country in north-east Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. It is the third largest country in Africa. The River Nile divides the country into eastern and western halves. Its predominant religion is Islam.
Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations, such as the Kingdom of Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë and others, most of which flourished along the Nile. During the pre-dynastic period Nubia and Nagadan Upper Egypt were identical, simultaneously evolved systems of pharaonic kingship by 3300 BC. By virtue of its proximity to Egypt, the Sudan participated in the wider history of the Near East inasmuch as it was Christianized by the 6th century, and Islamized in the 15th. As a result of Christianization, the Old Nubian language stands as the oldest recorded Nilo-Saharan language (earliest records dating to the 9th century). Sudan was the largest country in Africa and the Arab world until 2011, when South Sudan separated into an independent country, following an independence referendum. Sudan is now the third largest country in Africa (after Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and also the third largest country in the Arab world (after Algeria and Saudi Arabia).

The UN Security Council meets today to see what can be done about the horrific violence that's engulfed South Sudan. President Salva Kiir is demanding a ceasefire - but rebel forces are ignoring calls for peace and calm.
Five South Sudanese government soldiers were killed in a shootout late Thursday between opposing army factions in the capital, a military official said Friday, and the U.N. mission reported an attack on a senior official amid fears of a return to civil war in the world's newest country.
South Sudan has what many business people describe as a "war economy"; people there are struggling to keep their companies afloat as a result of the brutal conflict which broke out between government and rebel forces in December 2013. Even if the recent peace deal holds, it will take some time for the economy to recover. Despite the challenges of civil war there are entrepreneurs and businesses with big hopes. But they have to deal with the lack of dollars in the country, and that has been driving up prices every day. Catherine Byaruhanga reports from Juba.
Sudan is feeling the economic crunch after the break away of South Sudan.
Tuesday, April 24 2013 marked the opening of a new session of the South Sudanese parliament. President Salva Kiir vowed to keep the country at peace and to gradually return South Sudan to prosperity after a year of economic turmoil. This comes after South Sudan resumed oil production to boost their economy, a move seen to improve the living conditions of the country's citizens. CCTV's Noel Mwakugu reports
An exhibition in Khartoum is hoping to show the damage caused by U.S. sanctions on Sudan since they began in 1997. The economic, trade and financial embargos were put in place after reports emerged that the Sudanese government was offering shelter to a terrorist in the mid1990s.
A delegation of representatives from the government and from the private sector of Sudan was in Brazil to offer partnership opportunities to entrepreneurs interested in doing business in Sudanese lands and to find out more about Brazilian agricultural programs.
South Sudan Economy, One Year After Independence
Oil fields in the north of South Sudan are coming under threat from the fighting between the government and the country's rebels. They are vital not just to Juba but also to Sudan, which serves as a major export route. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports from Khartoum.
Economic experts in South Sudan now warn that the country's sliding economy might get worse if a solution to the current crisis facing the country is not found soon. Commodity prices have almost doubled as the country's currency continues to slump against the dollar. Kofa Mrenje reports from South Sudan's capital Juba
As the conflict in South Sudan continues, many businessmen are being forced to leave the country, causing even more damage to the youngest nation economy. CCTV's Michael Baleke had the opportunity to speak with some of them.
After a two year conflict that's left thousands dead, millions displaced and an economy in tatters, Peace is finally on the horizon for South Sudan. On Monday rebel leader Riek Machar is expected in Juba and will be sworn in as Vice President. CCTV's Robert Nagila explores what this means for the economy.

Every day, IOM health teams provide lifesaving medical care to internally displaced persons across South Sudan, where 6.1 million people are in need of assistance due to two-and-a-half years of war. Doctors and nurses work in often harsh conditions as their efforts are hindered by insecurity, including violence that destroyed an IOM clinic at a peacekeeping base in Malakal in early 2016. The Waat clinic in South Sudan is overwhelmed, serving up to 70,000 people which is nearly double its intended capacity. Seasonal rains make it impossible for the sick to reach the nearest hospital, a nine-hour-walk away. For most of the patients, this clinic is their only access to healthcare services.
Less than 30 percent of people in southern Sudan have access to adequate health care. Widespread disease is threatening to overwhelm the African nation, where an upcoming secession referendum appears likely to create a new country. Special correspondent Jeffrey Kaye reports.

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
