One of National Australia Bank's rising stars is heading across the Tasman to run its New Zealand retail bank.

It is understood Paul Carter, NAB's head of wealth products who oversees the country's largest retail superannuation fund - MLC SUper Fund - will run retail banking at NAB's Kiwi offshoot, BNZ.

Carter is expect to report to BNZ chief executive officer Anthony Healy in his new role, and follow in the footsteps of a number of the bank's other executives who have done stints across the ditch.

Garry Mulcahy, head of NAB Asset Management, is expected to act in Carter's Australian role.

Among other executive changes, NAB Asset Management has hired Brian Long as head of retirement. The former Mercer Australia and Colonial First State executive will start with the bank on February 1.

And finally, NAB also hired Rachel Slade from Westpac Banking Corp as head of deposits and transaction services. Slade's expected to oversee deposits and transactions for the bank's retail, business, corporate and institutional customers.
