Honduras (i/hɒnˈdʊərəs/; Spanish: [onˈduɾas]), officially the Republic of Honduras (Spanish: República de Honduras), is a republic in Central America. It was at times referred to as Spanish Honduras to differentiate it from British Honduras, which became the modern-day state of Belize. Honduras is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea.
Honduras was home to several important Mesoamerican cultures, most notably the Maya, prior to being conquered by Spain in the sixteenth century. The Spanish introduced Roman Catholicism and the now predominant Spanish language, along with numerous customs that have blended with the indigenous culture. Honduras became independent in 1821 and has since been a republic, although it has consistently endured much social strife and political instability, remaining one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world.

Honduras Travel Video like its neighbors, Honduras is experiencing tremendous changes: an expanding tourist economy (cruise ships in Roatán?!), a maturing political scene, and the whole globalization thing, including maquilas, free trade agreements -- heck, even implementing Daylight Savings Time for the second time. Honduras remains deeply entrenched in a two-front war against gangs and HIV/AIDS. Illegal logging is emerging as another major concern (do you know where that new mahogany chest came from?) and a key issue among Honduras' growing environmental community. Honduras Travel Video, most Hondurans you'll meet are very laid back and, while not disinterested, certainly disinclined to make much to-do over politics and world affairs. And aside from the people-pull, nature has its own d...

They plan to build hotels, luxury villas and a golf course on the pristine white beaches of Tela Bay. On November 13th, 2015, Canadian tourism developer Randy Jorgensen, aka "The Porn King", appeared in court on charges of illegally appropriating ancestral Garifuna lands. The court ruled partially in Jorgensen's favour, choosing not to go to a full trial for the time being, but local communities smell corruption and vow to appeal this ruling in Honduran courts and keep on fighting all the way to international tribunals, meaning that Jorgensen's and others' investments remain in legal limbo.
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Last summer, Americans were stunned by images of children and families from Central America turning themselves in at the US-Mexico border. More migrants are now coming from the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula and surrounding areas than anywhere else in Central America. The society there has yet to recover from a 2009 coup that crippled the economy and unleashed extreme levels of violence and inequality. In our latest episode of Immigrant America, VICE News traveled to San Pedro Sula — the most violent and second largest city in Honduras — to find out why so many families and young people are risking it all to migrate illegally to the US. On Tuesday, US citizen Amarjit "La Chucky" Pabla was arrested in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. The 21 year old is allegedly the head of a faction of "Mara Barrio 18," one of the gangs responsible for a crime wave that's sent central American families flocking to the US in search of refuge. Authorities arrested Pabla along with two other Hondurans, and police also seized seven firearms. A spokeswoman for the National Anti-Extortion Force said that Pabla planned and ordered killings in territorial disputes with rival gangs., and is the wife of Cristian Ariel Calix, a "Mara Barrio 18" leader who has been in prison since December on charges of arms and drug trafficking. A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Honduras said the Embassy takes its obligation to support American citizens abroad...
San Pedro Sula, Honduras, has made it to the top of the list of the world’s most dangerous cities (outside of war zones) for three consecutive years, with an annual homicide rate of 187 per 100,000 people. Reporting crime in Honduras is considered a high-risk job — according to the Honduran National Human Rights Committee, at least 47 journalists and media executives have been murdered between 2003 and 2014. VICE News spent four nights alongside Orlin Castro, a young reporter who covers the crimes that occur in the streets of San Pedro — which often result from the never-ending turf war between the 18th Street and MS-13 gangs, two of the city's most notorious criminal groups. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders will meet Thursday in Brooklyn for their first debate in over a month. We begin today’s show looking at Hillary Clinton and Honduras. Since the coup, Honduras has become one of the most violent places in the world. Clinton was asked about Honduras during a meeting with the New York Daily News editorial board on Saturday. The question was posed by Democracy Now!’s own Juan González. Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs weekdays on nearl...

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Central and South America. It has the highest murder rate in the world, almost double the next closest contender. It's a place ravaged by the drug trade and political instability, where as recently as 2009 the military ousted a president pushing to modify the constitution in order to extend his own term. It may seem like the last place on earth where businesses would want to invest, and people would want to move. But there's a new idea about to be tried in Honduras. Some call it a Startup City or Free City, others a LEAP Zone, and in Honduran law it's known as a ZEDE. They are politically autonomous, privately run zones that supporters believe could transform not only Honduras, but the entire developing world. In "Governance as Technology," t...

Tegucigalpa, Honduras (NTN24) - Honduras' crime rate is skyrocketing. While the President has sent troops into the streets to help Police, many in the country have lost faith and started hiring private protection. Gate installers, gun stores, and private security firms report a boom in business. The recent high profile murders of lawyers, journalists, even a security adviser have helped to underscore Honduras' ranking as the highest per capita murder rate in Central America.

Follow the music, admire the art, place yourself inside historic architecture, in Telesur's "Cultura Latina". This week, host Mauricio Izquierdo treats us to culinary flavors in Peru and Honduras. We learn how to make several traditional desserts, including “picarones,” which are traditional Peruvian doughnuts containing squash, sweet potatoes and anise seed. Then moving on to Honduras, we taste some delicious dishes that have managed to survive the foreign fast-food invasion, including the popular “baleadas,” made of a wheat-flour tortilla filled with butter and beans. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/cultura-latina-436754/

In 2006 the Red Cross started a project called Redes, which means "networks" in Spanish, to support an integrated community health approach. A key component of this project was to encourage men to play an active role in family health care. "At first we thought it would be difficult. We thought people wouldn't be interested in discussing gender issues. The truth was that people were interested," says volunteer Melvin Varela.
